I made a book-card today for my mom's upcoming birthday.
it's a concertina style fold (think accordion), but I decided not to bind it together into a book, but to let the pages fold out all the way.
this is what it looks like all folded out. (forgive the bad quality photo; I was doing better with the closeups than with the wide-shots, but I wanted to show it in full.)
and here's a close up of the front cover and first two letters.
I got the idea while reading the first 30 or so pages of this book on handmade books (the concertina fold is the first style that they talk about), and decided to give it a try. it's a relatively simple style - no binding/sewing to do, but it requires very LONG sheets of paper.
I went to the queen anne office supply store to look around, but they didn't really have 'long' sheets of paper. they DID, however, have register tape. yes. cash register paper. or. adding machine rolls. whatever you want to call it. and I figured that it would work as well as anything, so I bought a roll of that. only 1.59! for.... a very long roll of paper. 3 inches wide, and as many inches long as I want! this one was 24 inches long, folded into 16 sections.
for the front/back cover, I used index cards, and covered them with a bit of scrapbooking paper. simple, but fun. oh. and a lot of double-sided tape. 3M is my friend.
I've been trying to 'make' something every day or two. just to keep me motivated and remind me that I can, in fact, create things. mostly it's cards and cooking. I made gyoza the other day, and before that, cherry tarts for
tyrven's birthday party. I wish I'd taken pictures of the binary birthday card that I made for him (or the one I made for my friend michelle). and the knitting projects.... take more than a day. but they're coming along too.
hopefully, I'll be able to figure something out for christmas cards soon, so I can start making them. josh's birthday is november 6th (birthday card!) and it's coming up on thanksgiving soon, so mmm for pumpkin pies! (maybe I'll make mini pumpkin pies with my tart tins! :)
fun fun fun.
