It's Burns day today for those who don't know.
I am a big fan of Burns poetry. I have fond memories of doing poems such a Tam O'Shanter in school. It's very visual. My art teacher used it the basis for a project. He read whole chunks to us before letting us loose on our own sketches/paintings. *Happy days*
I love the line about the wives attitude to the men being out the pub:
"Gathering her brows like gathering storm,
Nursing her wrath to keep it warm."
For a time,
Scots Wha Hae was probably considered an unofficial national anthem for Scotland. I don't think it's suitable for a national anthem because it's so backward looking. I feel the same about O flower of Scotland (non Burns) for the same reason - although I love to sing both!!. The words have spirit!
"We will drain our dearest veins,
But they shall be free.
Lay the proud usurpers low,
Tyrants fall in every foe,
Libertys in every blow,
let us do or dee"
You're welcome Willie Stewart is another fab song.
laura_w sang this as a duet at Eric Maloudi's 40th birthday last January. Although
Eddi Reader sings it far better :) She also sings John Anderson my Jo and Ae Fond Kiss very well.
To a louseTo a louse
O wad some Power the giftie gie us
To see oursels as ithers see us!
It wad frae mony a blunder free us,
An' foolish notion
Tam O ShanterBut pleasures are like poppies spread,
You sieze the flower, its bloom is shed;
Or like the snow falls in the river,
A moment white--then melts for ever;
Or like the borealis race,
That flit ere you can point their place;
Or like the rainbow's lovely form
Vanishing amid the storm.
To a mouse"But mousie thou art no thy lane,
In proving foresight may be vain;
The best laid schemes o' mice and men gang aft agley,
An Leaving us nought but grief an' pain for promised joy."
