A colleague died Monday night after a long battle with inoperable cancer. JB smoked 4 packs of cigarettes a day for the 15 years I knew her. She's out of her pain now, but I can't help thinking she didn't have to go through this.
There's no smoking allowed in the building, so JB and her co-smokers all got to know one another through the years while standing outside the back doors. Not one of these people stopped smoking after JBs diagnosis. They've all been to see her - you'd think seeing a once vibrant active woman bed-ridden and skeletal would scare them into stopping. My dad used to be a heavy smoker, and then a neighbor of ours came down with cancer, and emphysema, and I and my siblings started nagging him to quit. We didn't want to see him end up like Mrs. S. It worked, thank goodness, but he still has a damaged heart.
Cigarettes are just evil.
