as you like it

i saw as you like it at unseam'd shakespeare. i was originally supposed to be in it, but i turned down the role (silvius) in order to do richard. part of me felt bad, because i love the director, but the part of me that got paid was very much content.

anyway...i've decided that i hate concept shakespeare. lame lame lame. anytime you set shakespeare past the victorian era, the language loses it's potency and the play inevitably gets contemporized. if you're looking for accessability and naturalism, just do noises off. it's much funnier.

that said, the director did the only thing she could do after making the decision to set the play in the 1960s: she went over the top with the entire production, adding a cheap laugh here, allowing a sight gag there. the subtleties were lost, but there were bits that, despite the text (which they were continually working against), made me laugh.

the acting was, on the whole, good. orlando was great, except for a few lines that might make more sense to the audience later on in the run. rosaline was funny, so was cecilia and silvius. jaques was a serious problem in the world created by the director, and was handled by an actor that had no idea what he was doing.

all in all, i'd recommend it so long as you get good and trashed before hand and are able to get student rate tickets at the door. peace.
