Ah, now there's a rivalry to aspire to. I agree with ce_lestic. She's actually my favorite female character, though I never made it past vol 20 of the manga except to exclusively read parts with Kenpachi... which are increasingly rare.
Btw, off topic a bit, but on Orihime; would you dislike her as much if there was no IchiOri ship? I only know of her weakness through your LJ. And, her weakness is never mentioned without IchiOri insanity. (I think I see two reasons why the small-minded ship exists, but mind you I am, essentially, an outside observer of Bleach at this point. My two reasons have more to do with readers than they do Bleach events.)
But I digress. Orihime dislike: would it exist in a vacuum?
I'm inherently not fond of female characters who ignore their friends and own individual interests in the pursuit of men who are not very good to AND for them. Shippers have very little to do with my base dislike for the IchiOri ship; I think it's repulsive as it is in the manga without my dealings in fandom. I find IchiOris by and large to be the most annoying batch of shippers I have ever run across in any fandom, but they are not why I find the ship repulsive and pathetic. No, no, the reasons for that are all in the manga

That answers my question and then some. It seemed to me that Orihime dislike was made worse by IchiOri shipper insanity.
And, I admit, I was having a hard time understanding the passion you have for people that insist on that pairing. When you consider there are people that get off on being peed on or kicked, IchiOri shipping doesn't seem all that bizarre. It may be that it takes a pee/kick mentality to like IchiOri, but I didn't understand passing judgment on the shippers.
Normally I would have asked my friend (hbanana7) about it, but she's buried deep in finals, so I haven't had much chance. Orihime, in my experience (which is little) has revolved around being a big-breasted Mary Sue. There's not much there, but what I saw (back in the beginning) seemed harmless.
I don't know the current arc, but considering the old arc, I'd wonder if Orihime isn't just another version of Momo to Ichigo's Hitsugaya.
Only if I hated Orihime would I desire Ichigo with her. Then she could have a lifetime of miserably yearning for him to really look at her straight rather than the apathetic friendliness he typically delivers. He's really not good for her at all, and the reverse is true as well.
And, I admit, I was having a hard time understanding the passion you have for people that insist on that pairing.
Hah, umm... after I wrote the Lust essay? IchiOris wanted my head on a pike. And they still do. *_* I rarely ever blog about the trolling that they do, but they do plenty of it
