Montreal Gazette: "Looking forward to it" - Marino speaks
A 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 win over Junri Namigata of Japan on Monday puts the Vancouver native into the second round against French Open champion Francesca Schiavone.
Here is some interesting stuff about the conditions of the match from Stephanie, our intrepid reporter:
The girl earns her way straight into the main draw, takes care of a similarly-ranked opponent and moves into the second round, and you're docking her style points. ;-)
What you probably couldn't sense on your computer screens was that the conditions were miserable. It looked like it was going to rain any second, and that typically will send a player rushing to try to finish before there's an interruption that can change the momentum.
No player is immune to that kind of thing, not even a No. 1.
There also was a serious wind blowing in one direction, and sometimes when you're a bit uptight, you forget to adjust for that on the side with the wind. And then the errors start to come, and then you get a little more nervous and uptight about the whole thing.
Marino didn't do anything particularly wrong in that second set - except perhaps get ahead of herself a little bit because she was winning so easily. And Namigata didn't do anything particularly great other than to hang in there.
But sometimes a set just gets away.
Marino was going for her second serve a lot, too - often closing in on 100 mph. So errors will come from that, as well.
The important thing was that she righted the ship in the third and gave herself a little cushion when she had a hiccup closing it out.
The great thing about sports is that there is "should" do this. And then you have to go out and do it. And it doesn't always happen.
Otherwise, Leonard Mayer wouldn't even have bothered to take the court against Nikolay Davydenko yesterday - y'know what I mean?
There are human beings, not machines (And they're GIRLS ;-)
Against Schiavone - it's a whole different kettle of fish. Different opponent, different day.
And there is far less of a chance that she'll jump all over a set and a break lead, and therefore there will be no opportunity to get ahead of herself.
But if there is, she'll just have to deal with it.
