In what was definitely a first for Canadian tennis, all eight players entered in the first round of the 2010 US Open qualifying have won their matches and moved into Friday’s second round.
Two men, Frank Dancevic of Niagara Falls, Ont., and Peter Polansky of Thornhill, Ont., advanced to the second round on Wednesday, a day of competition that was substantially shortened by rain.
On Thursday, Milos Raonic of Thornhill, Ont., made it three for three when he beat Mischa Zverev of Germany 6-4, 6-3.
The five Canadian women, Stéphanie Dubois of Laval, Que., Heidi El Tabakh of Oakville, Ont., Sharon Fichman of Toronto, Rebecca Marino of Vancouver and Valérie Tétreault of St. Jean-Sur-Richelieu, Que., completed their matches on Thursday - without losing a single set.
The qualifying continues Friday at the National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y., with all the Canadians in action.
Players need to win three rounds to reach the main draw. Already in the women’s main draw, by direct entry, is Aleksandra Wozniak of Blainville, Que. And her opening round opponent will be...a qualifier.
