The care and feeding of writers
My poor husband did not know he had married a writer until it was too late. That's because the disease was in remission until I was in my 40's. Poor thing! He's coping pretty well. Writers are, I have decided, not entirely normal. We take a lot of attention, for one thing.
If you know someone who turns out to be a writer, here is how you can help them.
Do not ask how the latest book is going. If it's going well, they'll mention it, and if it isn't, they won't want to be reminded.
If they publish a book, buy it!
If you read the book and hate it, either be prepared to lie and say you haven't read it yet or have a vague or diplomatic answer ready if you're asked for your opinion, like "It's not really my kind of book," or "Gosh, I was amazed at the way you ended it."
If you read the book and like it, POST A REVIEW on Amazon or elsewhere on the web.
If they have a reading or signing that is local, try to go. It's really sad if no one shows up.
