It's snowing hard here in Maryland, and looks like it could keep snowing well into tomorrow. Predictions range from 11 inches to two feet. The DC area has a strange love-hate relationship with snow. We don't get enough of it that people ever learn how to drive well in it, or to justify everyone owning a Jeep (which seems to be the law in places like Colorado). As a result, a few inches can bring the town to a crashing stop. Everyone rushes to the store to buy milk and toilet paper and snow shovels. Schools close just from the forecast, before a single flake hits the ground. This might be one reason why some folks love the snow:mdash; many of them are kids and school teachers, it's true. They usually like weekend snow a lot less.
I'm the opposite: I don't mind the snow so long as I don't have to go anywhere, and tomorrow, I shouldn't have to go anywhere. I was going to go get a Christmas tree, but that can wait until Monday. As long as the power stays on, I can write, I can read, and we have food in the house. That's the key; with electricity, a foot or two of snow is a pretty but inconvenient thing. With no power, snow bumps us back a century or so, and that's not a journey I want to make except lost in the pages (or Kindle screens) of a good book.
So, is it snowing where you are?
