It's the last week of classes at the college, and I just marked a bunch of letters and reports for my business English class. The final reports take about 25 minutes each to mark, easily; luckily I only have 15 students in this class. The majority are in biotechnology, and they are fun to teach because they are more serious than some of my other students in fields such as Police Services or Hotel Management.

The colleges in Ontario have a complex and extremely annoying system for contract teachers which was made to ensure more full timers were hired and to avoid exploiting part timers/contract teachers; however, it ends up exploiting the part timers even more. One can only teach a full load for 12 months out of 24 as a contract teacher; the other 12 months one must teach a maximum of six hrs per week...if you were hired to teach 8 hrs, the college has to pay you closer to a permanent employee's hourly rate. There are so many teachers looking for work that the college just cycles them around to avoid paying anyone more than it absolutely has to.

I am done my 12 mo of FT work, and so must now work 6 hrs or less for a yr...so I'm looking for another job. I was offered the business writing course for 11 weeks this winter at 4 hrs a week by the college, but I gathered my courage and turned it down because it has 30 students in it. I know from last term that this would mean at least 12 hrs of work a week for the one course, for $160 a week. I just can't do that anymore. I'm grateful for the experience in teaching I got here, but I need something with more security now.

So: no job in January. Job search time again.

PS: I wrote a letter telling the head of my division why I was turning down the course, and how much marking work it was. I estimated there was 100 for each student per term, minimum, or 3000 minutes for 30 students. I got no answer, but meanwhile they have not found anyone to take the job yet. :) If noone took it on they'd have to pay someone more...or change the course.
