Cacau opts to leave VfB

Claudemir Jeronimo Barreto, or Cacau for short, will leave VfB in summer after seven years at the club. The striker had been offered a ready-to-sign contract by the club but, on Wednesday, Cacau decided that he would not accept the offer. The decision means that the clubs longest current servant will leave VfB Stuttgart, with whom he won the German championship in 2007 and where he became a German international in May 2009. In January of the previous year, the Brazilian born front man received German citizenship.

First outing for VfB in 2003

Cacau came to Germany from his home country in 2000 and began his German football adventure with Türk Gücü Munich before moving to 1. FC Nürnberg in 2001. In summer 2003 Cacau signed for VfB and made his debut for the club in League Cup semi final against Borussia Dortmund (0-1) on June 21st. In 172 Bundesliga appearances for Stuttgart, the striker has scored 57 goals. Cacau considers his greatest success to have been winning the German championship in 2007.

This afternoon Cacau commented on his decision:
"I have thought about this step for a long time and eventually came to the conclusion that after seven years it was time to look for a new challenge. I had a fantastic time with VfB, I have made many friends and experienced great sporting successes. In the end we couldn't find a common ground but I will never forget my time at VfB and in the remaining games I will give my all to help ensure a successful end to the season."

Subsequently Executive Representative for Sport Horst Heldt remarked on the striker's decision:
"We made Cacau a reasonable offer, which we subsequently twice improved upon during the course of our negotiations. We would very much have liked to extend the deal but unfortunately Cacau opted not to stay at VfB. We wish him all the best for the future."

I don't think anyone really cares about this, but to me, it is still sad. When I first fully started watching the Bundesliga back in 2006 and fell in love with VfB Stuttgart, the strikers were Cacau and Gomez. It just seems like all the "old school" VfB players are going. First Hildebrand, then Meira, Hitzlsperger, Magnin, Pardo, Gomez, and i'm probably missing a few :\

I heard Cacau may be going to Sevilla, which will be good for him. Hopefully he makes a nice niche there.
