One of the PhD students in my department sent out an email today. He is enrolled in a course called "Designing and publishing scientific research", and one of the assignments he has been given is to "to act as a peer-reviewer to two manuscripts and write a professional feedback for them, just as many of us are asked to do by editors of scientific journals". Therefore he sent an email to those of us in the department who have research fields similar to his own and asked if we have any papers nearing the point of being ready to submit to a journal that he could "review" for this assignment, with the intent that he might have suggestions for improvement of the manuscript before we send it off to the journal.
First of all I kind of envy him the opportunity to take such a course and get such practice--we didn't have courses like that at UTAS while I was there (though I do recall a one-afternoon seminar on the subject which didn't include the topic of reviews at all). Secondly, I am delighted by the chance to take advantage of this offer--not only might it help the document, but the need to get it to him soon enough to have his review done before his course ends means that I can't delay in the writing, which is coming along, but is not done, yet...
uni work,
good timing
