Print from an album of 41 albumen prints by Edmund David Lyon. General view of the two gopurams of the Kalaiyarkovil (Kaliyarkoil) temple in Tamil Nadu. The presiding deity of this temple is Shiva, known here as Kaleesar and Kannapar. Kalaiyarkovil is five miles from Sivaganga (a well-known pilgrimage destination). The huge and imposing gopuram or tower of the temple, about 150 feet high, is famous for being visible at a great distance. Lyon explained in his 'Notes to Accompany a Series of Photographs Prepared to Illustrate the Ancient Architecture of Southern India' (Marion & Co., London, 1870), edited by James Fergusson, that this photograph 'shows the two front Pyramidal Towers, the tallest of which is said to be visible from Madura, a distance of more than thirty miles'.
