Politics of Interracial Marriage

Oct 15, 2009 18:39

A Louisiana Justice of the Peace refused to marry an interracial couple on the grounds that marriages between blacks and whites "do not last long" and that there "is a problem with both groups accepting a child from such a marriage".

Meanwhile, Bill De Blasio is running for public office in NYC. He put his interracial family in his campaign advertisements. He's been married to his black wife for 15 years, by the way and is spinning his interracial marriage as a positive. I bet the Justice of the Peace in Louisiana would feel a little flustered if this were pointed out to him.

This all seems to be dependent on geography and the racial mix of the couple and the sexes of the two. For example, a white man and an asian woman will draw fewer stares than a black man with a white woman.

Personally, I'm surprised anyone makes a big deal about this sort of thing anymore. Marriages between whites and blacks may not last long but with the rate of divorce in this country a lot of same race marriages wind up with the couple sleeping in separate beds six months after the honeymoon. And De Blasio's marriage is a positive? Seriously, I doubt it will somehow magically make him a better public servant than it would if his wife were white.

As usual, politics is a subject populated on both sides mainly by a bunch of nervous nellies who don't know what they are talking about.

And this is me...on your Livejournal...being a political independent...and laughing in amused disgust at both sides.

race, politics
