Three Times Caprica Six Observed a Child, and One Time She Held One
One thing fascinated Number Six above all other aspects of human culture. Children.
The first time she noticed-really noticed-them, Six was walking through the Riverwalk. There were many of them, ranging in shapes and sizes. Six was struck by just how tiny and insignificant they were. So soft and fragile and unable to do the most basic task by themselves. The smallest of them could not even communicate simple desires or needs. How terrible it must be to be a child, to be so utterly helpless, she’d thought. The Cylon race came into existence, fully conscious and aware, and would continue to be so into eternity. It was better that way.
Several weeks later, her observations took her to a learning facility-the Athena Academy, where humans sent their children to learn. Though bigger than some of the others, she was still aware of the flaws so deeply embedded in them. Deception, cruelty, and violence still ran rampant in these supposedly innocent beings. She watched as two young ones battled, each gripping the end of a doll. They yelled and pulled and twisted, until the fabric gave way with a loud rip. The children left crying. Even the small humans destroyed things-even those that were dear and precious to them.
Number Six had been living among the humans for nearly a year and a half before she perhaps, finally understood.
The sun had been shining and she had time before her next meeting, so she took a stroll through Apollo Park. Even in the din of the park, she heard a small cry rising out above the rest. A human child was crying, alone. Curiosity drew her near and she knelt down. “Are you lost?”
The child hiccupped and stared at her for a long moment before she nodded.
“Megan? Megan!” A woman surged forward from the crowd, scooping the little girl up into her arms and showering her with kisses; Six, however, was awed by the transformation of the child. The small face that had held so much grief just moments ago, was now filled with a light and joy she had never seen before. “Thank you, so much,” the woman said.
“It was nothing,” Six told her as she turned away. The image of that child’s smile remained, glowing in her memory.
Many months later, Number Six had the opportunity to hold a child for the first time. The child was a small one, wrinkled and red in the face, but still somehow beautiful. Two years, it had taken her to understand what the humans saw in these children-hope, innocence, joy-they were the future.
It was just a shame that the future was ending today. There was nothing she could do to save the small life in front of her-except for one small act of mercy.
As Six walked away, it dawned on her that she would never again see a child’s face light up with a smile. After all, the Cylon race came into existence, fully conscious and aware, and would continue to be so into eternity-they couldn’t have children.

Oh yeah, that's Caprica alright. Hee.
OH HAI THAIR CAPRICA THE SHOW REFERENCE. WELL PLAYED!
Aw and Apollo has a park.
I love the way her finding Megan and seeing the child's face change when her mother picks her up very much foreshadows her + Hera + Opera House + picking up. <3
I also like the way this could set up the idea that Caprica maybe had a hand in the cylon "plan" changing from annhilating all the humans to trying to breed with them, since she has this fascination with babies and futures.
SOO GOOD BB. THANK YOU. (THANK YOU ESP FOR KICKING THINGS OFF SINCE LIFE IS KICKING MY ASS LIKE NOBODY'S BUSINESS ABOUT NOW. ♥♥♥♥♥)

Nicely done, bb. I like the progression of her fascination with children from utter hatred to wondrous fascination. Caprica!Six is the start of the humanizing of the cylons and I love this glimpse of her journey towards promoting the eventual alliance between humans and cylons. Very thought provoking. :)

I've always seen Caprica Six sort of at the forefront of "Cylons are people too!" And my fascination has been like tenfold since I watched the mini with my friend and right after the neck snapping, my friend told me to watch her face carefully. Definitely a mercy killing. I've been wanting to write about that for a while.

This fic is so perfect, I can't even. I want to hug you and this fic for all eternity. Her inability to understand why tiny humans behaved the way they did, and then the memory of the little girl smiling, and the baby... it was perfect.

And that last line makes you think about how the Cylons came to desire having children...
