I AM SO EXCITED YOU GUYS!!!!!
OK, so in 1972, the feminist arts program at UCLA (plus a few invited fiber artists) did a collaborative project called
Womanhouse. They took over an old house that was scheduled for demolition and transformed it. Every room was an installation, and they also had performance pieces. You can click the link above for a more complete description, and there's a documentary out there, though I'm not sure where you can watch it. But the main quote I'll take from that page to share is: "The age old female activity of homemaking was taken to fantasy proportions. Womanhouse became the repository of the daydreams women have as they wash, bake, cook, sew, clean and iron their lives away."
Why am I so excited about something that happened almost 40 years ago? Well, I'm not. Not about the original, anyway (er, not that I don't like it, because I do, that's just not why I'm excited). But a group of us UNL students have decided to revisit Womanhouse, for the 40th anniversary next year. We only had one meeting so far, last night, so no real plans yet. The idea behind Womanhouse was to examine what it meant to be woman and to operate in the domestic space. This has obviously changed a lot since 1972. What we end up making will no doubt look and feel very different. But I am still so excited to be doing a collaborative feminist project!
