So I worked some on a costume for Dennis last night. I started the silly thing like two years ago or something. Some things I had forgotten/need to remember about sewing:
- I'm really not that terrible at it. Not great, but way better than I tell myself. I got a medal in a (albeit small) costume contest with my fledgling skills, I can make a passable outfit.
- I'm ridiculously *SLOW* at it. Took me 3 hours just to attach a collar and two sleeves. The pieces were already cut too.
- Threading a needle when one has a benign tremor is really hard, obnoxious and frustrating. I should get a needle threader thingie.
- Trust in the pattern. This goes for knitting as well. I keep coming across instructions that make absolutely no sense to me, but then I do my best to do what it says, and voilá! Everything falls into place quite nicely.
- There is a lot of ironing involved when sewing. Press the seams, fuse the facing, press the hem, etc.
- I hate ironing.
- I really suck at hand sewing. Nothing comes out even, it's slow, and I just generally don't like it.
- Not every little thing has to be perfect; most of those screw-ups don't show up at all once you turn the garment right-side-out.
All in all, I had fun! I think I'm going to see how much more I can get done tonight before I have to go to the gym.
