What a crazy weekend!
It actually started Thursday night. Quasi (my cat) was being extra cute and lovey while I was goofing off online. I hear footsteps coming up the stairs. I figure it's the husband. Nope! I look and standing in the doorway is my cousin Marly. She hadn't told anyone but my dad that she was coming up from Florida for a surprise visit. Apparently she was just "bored" and convinced her husband to make the drive up. I promptly fired off an email to my supervisor letting her know I'd be taking a sick day the following day (not that she was going to be in that day either).
The next day, Marly, Lee (her husband) and I went to visit my dad where he works so Lee could get a tour of the foundry. My dad was less than pleased to see me. Every time I take a day off work, he figures I'm going to lose my job over it, no matter how much sick and vacation time I have accumulated. It was actually a really cool tour; I've been there so many times, but my dad never really explained stuff in such detail. He was a very good guide (and he should be; he's been working there for well over 30 years now). Learned a lot.
Then the three of us went to the zoo! Had a good time there. Got to talk to the zoo keeper for the tigers. She was way younger than I was expecting, and she seemed happy that people had come specifically to see her and that we were full of questions n such. We also went to a super corny animal show where they asked for volunteers, so Marly and I (along with two little girls) went up on stage, and we all got to help hold a 60+ lb burmese python. It was HUGE. And so awesome. Spending all day in the sun in a tank top did wonders for my tan. And no burn! After the zoo, we went to surprise our cousin Rosie who also had no clue that Marly was in town (she had thankfully missed my facebook update about that). She was suitably shocked, and it was good times. Also went to my mom's for dinner where I managed to not over eat for once.
Saturday morning I went to crossfit. We did a tabata thing. So you do 20 seconds of squats, then you get 10 seconds of rest. Then you repeat for a total of 8 rounds. Then you move on to doing push-ups, sit-ups and presses like that. I was able to do 16 squats each round. That's 128 squats. OW. Of course I wouldn't feel it till much later. Dennis had scored some VIP tickets to the airshow, so we went. He also knew a company there at the airport, so we crashed their party and got free food. The wings were very tasty, and so were the meatballs. It was quite fun. Another day of spending time out in the sun in a tank top! The Thunderbirds were fantastic. Some of the passes they did totally made me wince though. They got *SO* close to each other! Saw and Apache and Harrier demonstration too. The Harrier is DAMN LOUD. Took us an HOUR to get out of the parking lot when it was all over. Then it was off to my aunt's for dinner. They grilled burgers and brats, and my mom made her potato salad which I just LOVE.
Sunday I got up and went for an easy 2 mile run to help the ol' thunder thighs recuperate from all those squats. I ended up at a decently fast pace actually! (for me anyway) Then I called Marly, and learned she and my parents were going to Famous Dave's bbq for lunch. Dennis and I hightailed it over there. So much yummy meaty bbq goodness! Although Dennis makes much better chicken. Then we went to my mom's for a bit for coffee and dessert. Then we said our goodbyes to Marly and Lee who were leaving that afternoon, and headed home for a nap.
Yesterday I went for a hike with the meetup group. Dennis was whining about how his feet hurt from the airshow, so he stayed home (and he's used to being on his feet all day; I'm not). Good thing too, it was a tough hike! Over 8 miles, and hilly terrain. The last half mile or so nearly did me in. My legs were SO sore. I don't know how thru-hikers or even the ultra speedy ultra light hikers do it! I likely need better shoes. I knew the hike would be that long (and it certainly felt a lot longer!) but I really had no idea it would be that tough. It's humbling and rather annoying when you think you're in shape, then you go do something like that and realize how soft you still are.
Didn't get anything done this weekend that I'd planned, with the exception of the hike. I don't care though, it was a fantastic extra long weekend, and a great way to finish off the summer.
