*MASTERPOST*It wasn’t a meadow he remembered from the dreams he had in the clinic. It wasn’t even a forest or a park… It was the cursed room with crimson curtains he spend his last days before leaving that hellish facility. For a second Ninomiya was even scared that he never left, that everything he did was a long dream and right now he woke up, right before his next therapy session.
“No, Kazu. It’s not real, even though it feels like it. I… I took you here because I thought it’ll be easier to explain everything here, where it all began for me.” Jun took a deep breath but he didn’t move an muscle, not sure if he can get even an inch closer to Nino. The shorter man frowned, not understanding anything. What had begun in this place? Was Matsumoto indeed a clinic employee who lived here and had only one task - make them torture Kazunari even more?
“What did begin here?” Ninomiya asked when the silence prolonged. Matsumoto took a deep breath and sat on a chair that appeared out of nowhere.
"It is a long story but then again, time doesn't exist in dreamland. If you want to hear me out, I will tell you everything."
"S-sure..." Nino stuttered and looked around to find a place to sit as well.
"Okay then..." Jun looked down and kept silent for a longer while, as if he was gathering strength to tell his story. Kazunari didn't rush him, even though curiosity was driving him crazy. Or maybe it was the latter's scent who was doing that?
"How long we know each other, Kazu? It's been awhile right?"
"Almost two years since you appeared in the clinic..."
"Only two years? It seems that I know you my whole life... But to be honest, those two years are in fact my entire life..."
***
"You can't leave me here! You promised me you will let me stay at home... I... I changed, I am not sick!" Jun was screaming, not even trying to stop tears running down his cheeks. How could his step-mother do this to him? How could she put him in some mental clinic when he was perfectly fine?
"No Jun, you're not healthy. You belong here. And from now on stop considering us your family." The woman said with the coldest tone he had ever heard, turned around and went back to the car. This was the last time he saw her and the day he met his torturer - doctor Aikawa.
"Ohgawa-san, please take care of our patient and show him his room. First conversation will be set tomorrow morning. I trust you will share the rules here as well." The older man disappeared right after he finished last sentence, leaving Matsumoto with the nurse. The boy didn't know what will happen to him right now; he was still crying, helpless and scared to death. How could she do this to him? Why did his father agree on that?
"Matsumoto-kun, come with me. I will show you everything around here." Woman literally pulled the patient inside, leading him to his new home. At this point he still had hope that his family will change their mind and come back to him but that dream died soon after he got booklet with all rules of the facility. No meetings with any other men except, of course, Aikawa. No touching yourself or expressing any kind of interest in any male. Eating, bathing at set hours, not even minute late. This wasn't a hospital, this was prison. Jun was wondering when they will chain big iron ball to his leg to fulfill his impression. Did he really deserve all of this for having a crush on neighbor’s son? He didn’t even manage to do anything, except a sloppy smooch shared on the backyard. But they got caught and the other boy denied everything, playing a victim of a pervert teenager living next door even though he was the one who started the kiss. Right now neither of that mattered, Matsumoto needed to focus on surviving his staying in this clinic and the therapy sessions.
In his most terrifying thoughts he wasn’t ready for what they did to him. Jun expected some serious lectures and maybe some drugs which were supposed to kill his sexual urges but he never imagined that they will use electric shocks on him and try to fry out any thought about loving another man. The images they were using during this tortures they called therapy were horrid and he dreamed about them every single night. At some point he was so afraid to fell asleep, he was trying to stay awake as long as possible, before he was knocked down by the tiredness and slept twenty-four hours straight. Jun was one, big bundle of fear mixed with thoughts of death.
Each day was more terrible than the previous one and each minute was nothing else but waiting for another portion of shocks going through his body, burning not only his skin, memories but also desire to live. That was until he remembered he has a gift from his childhood friend in his backpack. It was a handmade dreamcatcher, not the prettiest one he had seen but made with warm feelings and best wishes. Wooden oval with purple pattern made from thread was soon hung in the window and small yellow feathers attached to it danced in the wind gently. Even though Matsumoto didn’t believe in such things, he didn’t have anything to lose. It won’t help him in any way but it won’t hurt to hold on to hope, no matter how irrational it was.
“Please, help me survive this… Please…” Jun whispered and gently traced the dreamcatcher’s shape with his long, thin fingers. Over two months had passed since he was locked up in this clinic but for him it felt a lot longer. How come everybody seem to know about this place but nobody is doing anything about what is going on inside these walls? Torturing people is a crime yet nobody seems to hear his screams. Yes, they are on an island but there has to be at least one person who can’t stand those shrieks… There has to be somebody…
“Help me… Please, help me…” Jun tend to whisper to the nurse who was taking him to another therapy session but she ignored his every word, limiting herself only to say few short orders. Matsumoto was alone and he was slowly losing his mind out of fear, hopelessness and electric shocks going through his body. The last bits of hope he still had in his heart were fading away leaving only darkness and coldness, similar to the concept of death he had. His body, however, got used to the place, fear and all the stress he had because it let him rest at night and after few months dreams came back. Some of them were beautiful, leaving him in tears and out of breath as soon as he opened his eyes and realized that the images he just saw were a creation of his sadistic sub-consciousness. Most of them were nightmares, with Aikawa being some kind of monster who was ripping his body piece by piece, giving him the pain he couldn’t bear. Dreamcatcher was still hanging in the window but it seemed to be only a decoration, not keep the horrible images away. Until…
One night Jun’s mind showed him the most realistic dream he had experienced, before and after. Everything inside felt so true, Matsumoto started to believe he will die and the doctor will devour him in one bite. When Aikawa’s enormous hand was few inches away, the patient suddenly found himself on a clear beach, with sun staying high and calm sea tickling his bare feet. Something was wrong, even though it felt so right. How come his mind could bring him in the safe place so suddenly, when all it did before was leaving him stranded in pain?
“I’m sorry Jun…” Somebody’s warm voice startled him. “I should have brought you here a lot sooner, but I am still learning…”
“W-who are you? Where am I?” Matsumoto asked, trying to take a better look at the person who was talking to him. A young boy with beaming smile, looking a bit embarrassed came few steps closer and reached out his hand.
“My name is Fukushi Souta and I am your dreamcatcher. Nice to meet you.”
“My who?” Jun frowned and didn’t move a muscle, still trying to understand anything from what had happened. Nightmare was long forgotten.
“Remember the cute gate you have placed at your window? It should catch all bad dreams but sometimes some of them are going through… Then it’s my job to protect you and take you to some nice and safe place.”
“I think mine is broken…” The older one mumbled and sat on a warm sand, still in slight shock. Dreamcatcher is actually a person? What kind of sorcery is that?!
“It’s not broken, it’s just too small…” Kid named Souta sat next to Matsumoto and took a deep breath. “But don’t worry, I am getting stronger and better each day so you won’t have to experience those awful dreams.”
“Thanks… I guess…” Jun smiled weakly. He didn’t feel so calm and peaceful since he got locked in this clinic. Maybe there still was hope for him after all, to get out of here, more or less sane, without any irreversible damages? Matsumoto didn’t allow himself to be excited, even tiny bit, no matter how much of a relief he felt after he met Fukushi. He could be only a creation of Jun’s sick mind but he would use a friend, even if he was only an imaginary one. Soon enough he got sure that Souta was a real person, able to sneak inside his room in some magical way through the wooden oval he called a gate. The older one couldn’t grasp his mind around it, he never believed in some supernatural, magical events you could read in a book or see in fantasy movies. Moreover he was focused more of staying alive and sane right now than anything else, so he just accepted by heart whatever the young boy was telling him. Matsumoto was happy he had somebody to talk to and when it later occurred that Fukushi probably has the same preferences it became even easier to trust him and lose a bit of the fear he was feeling constantly.
“I need to escape… I won’t stand it any longer… Please, take me out of here… You can use the gate to move me from here, right? It can be done… Right?” Matsumoto pleaded, grasping all the hope he could. He was more than sure he won’t survive another session.
“Jun-san, it’s not possible… I mean… Only Dreamcatchers can move freely like this, it is physically not possible to anyone else to go through the gate… I’m sorry… I can’t take you with me… But I can try to get you out of here in more… traditional way. I know it’s hard and painful, but can you hang on for a bit more? I will talk with my teacher, maybe he will have some ideas… I promise you, I will get you out…” Fukushi maybe was still just a kid but he was really mature. Way too much for a thirteen years old boy.
“I don’t know if I can… I… You don’t know how it’s like, feeling those needles in your body, drugging you so you won’t feel anything but are still conscious… And those pictures… Souta-kun, I… I don’t want to see them… I… I rather die…” Jun held his breath, desperately wanting to stop tears from falling but he failed miserably. When his lungs demanded air he gasped, sobbing right after. It was too much for him, he wanted to give up even more, knowing he doesn’t have anybody. Of course he could count on his only friend, Fukushi, but he still wasn’t convinced if anything what he had heard is true. Yes, he can touch the latter and he knows that the younger one is real but how can he be one hundred percent sure it is not something Aikawa put in his mind just to pull him away from suicidal thoughts? Matsumoto was confused more and more with each passing day, even though the boy was convincing that he is on his side. Jun just couldn’t trust his own mind anymore and doubting in everything was the only way he could protect himself at least a little bit.
“I have a plan but it’s risky and I don’t know if it works…” Souta said while sitting on the floor in the corner of Matsumoto’s room, playing with fringe of the crimson curtains. He looked really nervous and upset, even though he tried to hide it and look all tough and confident. The older one slid down off his bed and sat next to the latter, poking his side to make him speak. Since Fukushi appeared in Jun’s life few months ago his life here had changed. He became braver and somehow therapy sessions stopped having influence on his memory and sense of reality. This kid gave him hope and tried very hard to keep him sane, being still a child with his own problems with acceptance of his own nature. That night, just before he heard the most insane escape idea he decided that if he gets out of this alive, he wants to become a dreamcatcher himself. Maybe he will be able to pass the hope forward and this way repay Souta for everything he had done for him?
“My teacher wants to hire a lawyer to get you out of here or, if that won’t work, somebody who can pretend your distant uncle or cousin and take you out of here…”
“Wait… But won’t that take time?”
“It will, but my teacher is working on it. He wanted to talk with your parents but…”
“Let me guess… They told him I died. Maybe I should just keep it real…” Matsumoto tried to laugh but he failed.
“No, you should stay patient and keep the hope that you’ll get out of here.” Fukushi stated firmly. “I know that it doesn’t sound optimistic but hear me out. Ryu-sama knows what he is doing, I know him. He’s a man who is keeping the promises and he promised me that he will get you out of here.”
“You trust people too much, you know?” Jun shook his head and took a deep breath. “I guess I have no choice but wait, right?”
“You will get out of here, I am certain of it.” Souta smiled and seemed so confident it made Jun grasp pieces of hope. All he has to do is to stand the tortures for a bit longer… How much longer? How much of strength he has left?
“I am not sure if I can make it…”
“You can, if you do this right… Jun-san, I know it is the scariest thing you have ever done but… There is no other way. I… I want to help you and this is the only thing Ryu-sama and I could think of, and believe me he was against all of that in the first place. Of me involving in your life more than necessary.”
“I guess I have no other choice but wait…” Matsumoto sighed and leaned against cold wall. The plan can work or not… “But we need to do this in a smart way…”
“Of course. We will think of something, don’t you worry.” Souta smiled and poked the older one’s side, trying to pass all positive feelings he had to him. Probably this was the reason why Jun kept having hope that everything will be fine. That all he needs to do is to stand one more therapy session, one more day in this hell and everything will end. He even started to wonder where he will go after he leaves this place. Surely his family won’t accept him, he is dead for them. But he is old enough to find a job and try to live on his own, however he wants to, without people judging. Just a tiny little bit and he will be out of here…
“Souta-kun, I… I can’t stand it anymore, I just can’t...” Jun cried out, not caring if he can be heard. It wasn’t supposed to be like that… First of all Aikawa decided to change the schedule for Matsumoto and the sessions were repeated three times a week. The doctor also resigned from giving his patient any tranquilizers or painkillers. Jun actually felt the shocks going through his body, frying his skin and his senses were sharp, making all the horrible pictures clearer. At the same time nothing with the escape plan was moving forward, leaving him hanging somewhere between hope, despair and darkness. He was on edge of braking some windows and cutting his wrists deep enough to die; anything just make it stop.
“Jun-san, we need to wait for better moment… I… I can’t predict when it will be save enough for us to move… Can’t you wait for a little while, I will talk with Ryu-sama…”
“No… It has to be today… I… I rather die before they will take me to tortures again…” Matsumoto felt a bit guilty for pushing all of his misery to thirteen years old boy but he didn’t have anybody else and the last piece of strength he had inside faded. It had to be tonight. Fukushi disappeared somewhere for a longer while but he got back when Jun lost hope that the younger one will appear.
“Five minutes before midnight you sneak out from your room. I think window should be open… Besides you can go to the small garden, right? I cut a hole in the fence… Once you get past it, you need to jump… They shouldn’t notice you but… Just in case, don’t waste time for thinking if it’s okay to jump or not. I know it’s dark and it will be practically impossible to see anything down there but they won’t see you as well. This is our chance…” Fukushi tried to sound confident but doubts could be still heard in his voice, as he was talking faster than a machine gun.
“Wait… I… I have to jump?! But… There are rocks down there and it’s really high, even if I manage to reach water, it’ll be like hitting a pavement…” Matsumoto frowned and tried to grasp anything from what was going on here. The younger one took a deep breath and tried to talk slower, explaining what he had discovered few days ago.
“I know that it sounds insane but hear me out. I checked what’s down there and yes, there are some rocks but if you pick the right spot, you will land in deep ocean… You will have to swim east until you reach the port and then you will have to sneak into the ship which brings supplies… I know it is the craziest thing you have ever done but… There is no other way. You have nobody outside who can simply get you out of here, you said so yourself that your family declared you’re dead to them. If you want to get out of here as soon as possible, you have to jump.”
Jun was so desperate to get out of here as soon as possible that he ignored all voices in his head saying this was an insane idea to jump from a cliff right to the sea below without making sure how deep the water is. It simply didn’t matter. He can be dead as soon as he hits the surface, this was still better than staying here.
“Jun-san, are you really sure you want to do it now. I know you want to get out of here but… I don’t want you to die… I can’t guarantee it’ll end well and…”
“Souta-kun… I will die if I stay here. One way or another…” Matsumoto calmed down a bit and took a deep breath. He was sure that even if he didn’t have any help from the latter’s side he would just simply jump that night. And he did. Jun sneaked out his room exactly at midnight, trying to stay invisible and not to hurry too much, no matter how bad he wanted to already be on the other side of the fence. The only thing neither of them predicted was armed guard walking around the building. The guard didn’t expect anybody sneaking out the building either, probably that was the main reason why he pulled the trigger. Fortunately the bullet hit Matsumoto in his shoulder, going through without leaving lethal wounds.

“I don’t even remember how I managed to swim to the pier, all I have in memories is both pain and happiness I got out of there…” Jun smiled weakly and took a sip of water, his throat was dry from all talking. Kazunari didn’t say anything during this story, too shocked and surprised to utter even a word. The older one was also a patient of this awful clinic? He went through the same?
“Why didn’t you tell me earlier?” Nino finally found a courage and strength to ask.
“Why would I? You had your own problems and I didn’t want you to have another one…” Matsumoto leaned back. “Kazu, I didn’t lie to you… I never worked for those monsters, I never was spying on you and… And feelings I had were true. They still are…”
“What happened after you reached the shore?” Ninomiya decided to ignore every attempt of confession. Yes, he needed the latter in his life but he wanted to know everything before he dives in any relation with the dreamcatcher.
“I was taken to the hospital, to treat my wounds. After couple of days I was released and Ryu-sama was waiting for me. I told him I want to become a dreamcatcher and save somebody… Like Souta did to me… I was accepted as a student…”
“When did Souta tell you about me?” Kazunari felt like some kind of policeman on the interrogation. Every piece of puzzle started to fit to its place and slowly he could see the whole picture.
“As soon as he got crush on you I guess… He couldn’t stop talking how cute you are and how he is afraid to confess. How happy he was when you shared his feelings.” Matsumoto chuckled softly and looked at the man in front of him. “I understand why he fell for you…”
“You do?” Nino couldn’t help but smile both because memories hit him and because apparently his feelings were mirrored. Even though he knew before that he loves Jun, everything become clearer right now, almost knocking him down and squeeze all the air from his lungs. There was one thing that was still keeping him away from throwing himself at the latter, hugging him tight and never letting go. That wiped the smile off of his face. Ninomiya was still a whore. Of course he didn’t take any money from anybody for having sex but the fact that he was sleeping around for at least the past few months made him feel like a prostitute. He suddenly felt dirty and unworthy of any affection from Matsumoto’s side. Kazunari had changed in a way the other one may not understand nor like. What if Jun is in love with the poor, hurt and scared boy he saw in the clinic? What if he still thinks that Nino is the same?
“I do.” The dreamcatcher’s voice brought Ninomiya back to earth. “Souta was talking about you a lot, chuckling and smiling whenever your name appeared in our conversations. I heard so many things about you then at some point it felt like I already know you, as if you were my friend. That’s why I agreed to protect your dreams when he asked me to…” Matsumoto sighed and looked down, not saying anything else. Kazunari wanted to ask how did it happen but words got stuck in his throat. Fukushi was gone and scratching the wounds wide open again wasn’t a good idea. Especially when Nino was still fighting with himself, trying to keep his doubts inside for a while. This was something he needed to solve alone.
“Why did you come to me? I mean, why then? Why not earlier?” Kazunari asked suddenly, his tongue working much faster than his brain. “Why did you come to me in the first place? Why didn’t you leave me… Why…”
“Kazu, the answer for all of your questions is very simple…” Jun smiled and got up, grabbing his jacket. “I have to go now… It’s late and I think you have few things to think about and it’ll be better if you do this alone.” Matsumoto scribbled something on small piece of paper and put on the table, under empty glass.
“This is my phone number. You can call me whenever you want to meet or just talk, no matter the time. From now on, we will meet only outside the dreams, I can promise you that. Goodnight…” The taller man smiled and bowed almost unnoticeably.
“Goodnight…” Nino whispered to the place where Jun was standing few minutes ago. The room suddenly became cold and empty, just like his chamber in the clinic. The tortures were still there, different though. This time he was his own torturer, feeding his pangs of conscience with face of every guy he slept with and every glass of alcohol he had drunk for the past few months. Yes, he was free and he could do whatever he wanted but why he decided to slowly destroy himself? Partying and sleeping around with everyone who had a dick and showed even the smallest interest in him wasn’t the thing he thought about when he was running away from his sister’s house.
What if he caught some disease? He didn't care about that previously, nothing mattered but his pleasure and the fact nobody could stop him from living the way he had chosen. But now... The fact he was in love with Matsumoto was wonderful but it knocked him down. Ninomiya's past can destroy his future. Both, his stay in the clinic and the fact that he choked on his freedom after he escaped from Shiori's house right now become an obstacle he couldn't pass. Behind it a happy life with Jun was waiting for him. There was no other choice... Kazunari took out a piece of paper and pencil and started to scribble things he has to do before he will allow himself to get lost entirely in those beautiful brown lakes of Matsumoto.
First was definitely get rid of alcohol, even lousy beer. He had his share already; one could even say he already drank more than his father during his entire life. Next, he will find himself a hobby. Something a lot safer that being a slut. Maybe video games? And, of course, he will get tested for every STD he could caught from those dozens of guys he had slept with, praying that every single one of them will have negative result. But he can do that tomorrow, it was too late for anything except sleep anyway. Nino cleaned up the room a bit, took a quick shower and snuggled up in his sheets, trying to stop thinking about anything and fly away in the dreamland but his mind didn’t allow him to.
Kazunari started to think about his sister and Jiro… Were they even looking for him? His so-called father for sure declared him dead but Shiori… She still was trying to help him get out of this godforsaken place. Does it mean she still cares for him? Ninomiya sighed and closed his eyes, realizing how much he misses his sister who saved him so many times from their psychotic father and decided he will call her first thing in the morning.
***
She wasn’t picking up for quite a while already. Ninomiya bit his lower lip and decided to wait just one more signal, maybe she is in the bathroom or just came back home and needs to take off her shoes. Just one more second, one more sound… He felt that if he hangs up right now he won’t have courage to call again. Right now, when he was sure he was lucky and didn’t catch anything nasty from anyone, when he was sober for almost three months, when he found a decent job he felt this was the best time to call his sister. That way he won’t have to lie that everything is fine and he is quite happy.
“Hello?” Woman’s voice brought him back to earth. His fingers tightened around the phone but no sound wanted to leave his throat. “Hello?”
“S-shiori?” Kazunari finally managed to utter one word and he could hear his sister held her breath on the other side of the line. “It’s me… Kazunari…”
“I know… Why are you calling?” It could be heard that Shiori is mad but there was something else in her voice, something which could be taken for a relief. “I mean… Why now, after all that time? Something happened? You need something?”
“No, no… I just… I just wanted to talk to you… Let you know I am fine and maybe ask can we meet? I’m in Sapporo but I think I can take couple of days off and go back to Tokyo…” Nino tried to sound calm, even though his heart was racing. He felt guilty that he left without a word but that was the only thing he could do at that time. That was the only way he could be free.
“I don’t have time now… Kazu, many things had happened you know? No, you don’t know, how you could possibly when you just run away and didn’t even care to call…” Shiori sounded more confident, the relief and worry audible in her voice long gone. “Father had a stroke. He barely walks and talks. Medical bills consumed everything he had. I am taking care of him, alone… All because you were a selfish brat and decided to escape. You didn’t think about me when you were sleeping with that boy from your school… You didn’t think about our family when you have chosen the wrong path… And you rejected any kind of help I gave you…”
“Shiori, what are you talking about? I didn’t chose anything, I was born this way, can’t you see?” Nino frowned and started to shake. To think he was feeling guilty and wanted to reunite with his only family… The only one who he thought understood him since he was a kid… Why he has to apologize for being himself? Why he needs to feel bad because his sister cannot accept him?
“I have enough of your stubbornness. You either come back here and live with us as decent man or live wherever you wish with mistakes you have done.”
“The only mistake I did was to trust that you will understand me. From now on you’re dead to me as I am dead for you. Goodbye.” Kazunari hung up and threw the phone across the room, not caring if it breaks. How he could be so stupid? How he could still believe that Shiori will accept him and understand? How?
“Fuck…” He cursed quietly and took a deep breath. Maybe this was needed? To figure out once and for all who is his real friend and who he should get rid of his life. Jiro didn’t give him anything but pain. And his sister… Yes, she was taking care of him but only when she thought he was like any other teenager. When it occurred that he is gay she didn’t hesitate to turn her back on him. Nino wasted enough of his time for worrying and feeling guilty; he wanted to have a decent life with the one he loves and be finally happy. Suddenly he started to need Jun more than before. Kazunari wanted the taller man to be here, hold him and tell him that everything will be fine, that he was doing the right thing but his relation with Matsumoto was still too fragile.
They decided to start anew without rush, get to know each other better. Dreamcatcher knows only the poor and hurt Ninomiya who can’t take care of himself and the younger one knows Jun as his guardian. As much as it was true in the past, many things had happened and they need to discover each other from scratch. They didn’t even make love yet, limiting to some not so innocent kisses from time to time. Kazunari could feel the latter is withdrawn, probably still having in mind the number of partners Nino had before and he couldn’t be blamed for that.
“I would do the same…”
“Sorry, the door was open and you didn’t hear me knocking…” Jun’s voice sounded really close to his ear. “You would do what?”
“Have doubts…” The shorter one said quietly yet firmly. Couple of weeks ago they made a promise that they will tell everything they think or feel, without hiding anything. “I would hesitate as well before I would touch a person with the past I have…”
“That’s not it, Kazu. It’s not and you know it.”
“I know I am rushing things and I shouldn’t. I just got used to going to bed with men on the first and the same last date… I’m sorry…”
“No, don’t apologize. Kazu, it’s not that I don’t want to make love to you. I just think it’s a bit too early. I want you to be one hundred per cent sure that you love me and that you can trust me entirely. It won’t escape…” Matsumoto smiled and pulled the latter in tight embrace. “Be patient. And then everything will be fine.”
“You promise?” Nino asked and moved away a bit just to be able to look in the latter’s dark brown eyes. Somehow he was sure that it’ll be just like the taller one says…
“I do.” Jun smiled and run his long fingers through Kazunari’s hair and pulled back, joining their lips in heated kiss. Probably for the first time in his life Ninomiya felt entirely good. He was kissing the man he was in love with and he didn’t have to feel bad about it. No guilt, no fear, no sadness… Everything was just as it should be, if not better. He pulled Matsumoto closer, tasting him insatiably and feeling he is in the place he should be. He’s home.
