Happy House Day

Nov 30, 2009 09:20

Includes batshit crazy opinions-BOGO, some drive-by TV babble, lots of brunches, and some movie reviews. Hey, four days off and no turkey to cook, things get busy.

Heroes-Thanksgiving

90% lame.
I love Angela Petrelli and I know she's really good at convincing herself that she can make things work out the way she wants through force of will, but I think she was delusion or just plain stupid this week, the build-up to the re-emergence of Sylar didn't really work. Adrian Pasdar, much as I love him, was able to make me believe in the duality thing, Milo V. was working the emo petulance instead of the genuine concern and ZQ was seemingly being directed to be Jack Nicholson in the Shining.

Meanwhile, over in cutesypoo land with the Bennets...ok, I'm a sucker for cute doggies, so I did like Mr. Muggles getting a girlfriend. Moreso than the return of Claire's that's for sure. The whole Serena (or whatever name she's supposed to have) thing with Noah is such a blatant retcon that I can't take it seriously. There's only one ex-partner I want to see him "hook-up" with and it ain't blondie. Sandra was awesome, but handwaving away Lloyd kind of sucked. It's Thanksgiving!!! Everyone can get away.

Carnivale redux is losing me again. Samuel's crowning moment of awesome in Georgia has already lost its luster and why do we need ANOTHER meglomaniacal special trying to increase his power, when Sylar already fills that role perfectly.

My Barrowmania is running very hot this week. Between the GMA interview clip, which has the fluctuating accent, the pink sweater and John's ego on parade ("my fans!") and his apparent blabbing of the confirmation for TW S4. Now we just have to send prayers to the appropriate deities that the good work of CoE will not have been in vain and real!Jack will return in all his heart-stopping, bastardy glory, either with/for the "new piece of arse" or to explain and explore the inexplicable, unexplored love. (Preferably in a way that can avoid the same kind of horrorshow of schmoop we were threatened with and barely avoided the last time around.)

*Waves at fans*

The wonderful world of brunch

Friday-Soul
On Octavia Street by the Freeway off ramp.
This used to be Jay's Pots of Soul, but is under new ownership. Still good, although not dishing out the mass quantities it was known for before.
We ended up there after an aborted bike ride. We'd been planning to head out to the park, but it was starting to rain and hubby decided to bail. I wasn't all that upset.

Saturday-The Cove-Castro Street.
One of the old school places to eat in the Castro and a survivor, since Welcome Home didn't make it. This place used to have awesome pictures on the walls from various Pride events and such. Those were then digitized and put on the monitors, but when we went on Saturday, they told us there was something wrong with the computer so the monitor was showing the names of whatever music was playing at the time. They hadn't devolved to one of those news/trivia/ads things you see in a lot of restaurants and coffee shops, but I imagine it's coming.

Sunday
Andalu
After the run, Ivan and I came down to the Mission and even found parking not far from the apartment. Hubby met us and we went to the Tapas place on the corner of Guerrero and 16th. SO GOOD. I had the French Toast, which is so rich I could only eat one piece. I've still never been in there for lunch or dinner, but damn the brunch is good. Now I need to figure out why sievebrain keeps forgetting the name.

Documentaries

Art and Copy
At the Roxie
I absolutely adored this. I have copy-writing and advertising in my blood and this movie made me wish I'd somehow taken a different career path that had let me work in that industry instead of the place I'm stuck now. Also, believe it or not, I got kind of teary about the some of the great ad campaigns of yesteryear. It was also fascinated to learn how they came to be and meet the people involved.

Oh My God
At the Lumiere
Australian guy with movie camera goes all over the world and asks people what they think God is and why religions fight. The people you'd expect say pretty much what you'd expect them to say. A little Discovery Channel, a little Travel Channel and a lot Link TV. Christians come off the worst, Buddhists the best. Moslems and Jews...not great, but not bad.
No idea what the hell Hugh Jackman is in there for, but he looks good.

Dig
Watched at home on DVD.
I wasn't really familiar with either of the bands involved (The Dandy Warhols and the Brian Jonestown Massacre) but found the personal dynamics fascinating, although there's always a point where ego-mania, drug abuse, and cinema verite fights with a girlfriend lose their interest.

A few weeks ago we watched Overnight, which is about Troy Duffy and the making of The Boondock Saints and also his attempt at a recording career. Put together they make a very compelling case for the music industry as a very bad place, but the case may actually be...Don't Be An Asshole. Because in both cases, the people who are able to somehow keep their egos in check and have a bit of perspective manage to survive far better than those deemed "geniuses" who are unwilling to compromise at all.

A new month. Almost. Another attempt at sugar detox. Because I seriously have nothing that fits. It's getting painful and embarrassing. Walked to work this AM and feeling pretty good so far.

Lots of hopes and fears for tonights episode of House. Come on guys. DO NOT SCREW THIS UP. Subtext baby. That's all I ask. NO FUCKING ANVILS. And keep Thirteen out of my face as much as possible. House party at 8PM PST. Feel free to take bets on how many time I will type STFU 13 in a one hour period.

Glee-Hairography

Cringe-o-rama. If Imagine was supposed to be heart-warming and tear-jerking, it failed. Dismally. I really wish this show would stop jerking me around. I know Puck has to be a douchebag, but for a second there (like Quinn) I kind of fell for it, and actually felt bad for her. I want to love Sue's eeeevil, but it's starting to wear thin. Will's stupidity was never cute and is getting less so. I want to like Kurt, but they keep whiplashing him between the two cliches and neither one is especially palateable. I'm not impressed with Tina turning into a bitch either.

Basically the only reason I'm watching this show is to keep up with the zeitgeist and because hubby likes it for some odd reason, so he Tivos it.

I really hope Keith and Rachel are both on tonight. (I think that's an opinion we can all agree on, right?)

Edited on December 1 to point out that I'm an idiot with an advanced case of sievebrain. Claire's bother is LYLE, not LLOYD.
