(Sorry for the length of my comment).

As painful as it was for me to read, I did enjoy the fact that Wilson got reexamined behind House's back, giggling at the results that he is still dying. He feels a peace with it, and to me, that is truly bittersweet.

It was fascinating when Tritter showed up, the fact that keeping their identities hidden was difficult. You've really painted that aspect of things realistically. It's interesting to know, as well, in this fic, that John gave House his estate. I especially enjoyed the last scene, with House so drunk that he's just forcing Wilson to admit to the darkest things about him, Wilson admitting that he likes House being cruel to others where he can't, and Wilson saying the thought House loved him which gives him pause, and House saying he hoped that Wilson's story of a threesome was true. (I could be wrong, but it seems that House had hoped that it said something about Wilson's sexuality.) The last part, where Wilson's leaves a bottle of Oxy and a note behind is the hardest to read. In the very end, IMO, it seems as though in their own ways, House getting into meth and forcing Wilson to watch, and Wilson leaving with Julie and the bottle of Oxy behind, they are both saying, "Fuck you, I give up on you."

Thank you for taking on this prompt, and for writing such an amazing fic for it!

Thank you for your lovely, detailed comment. I appreciate you reading the story, even though I know it's not what a lot of people want to see or believe for House/Wilson post-series.

Reading it again, I see that I also wanted to redeem characters who were trashed by the show and/or the fandom. I was guilty of this as well. Anyone who threatened House HAD to be evil. Never mind that Tritter (and even Vogler) started out as "real" characters who had genuine reasons to be at odds with House and who were eventually caricatured and demonized and "beaten" in unrealistic ways to make House the good guy he isn't.

Stacy took shit for daring to be a canon-heterosexual pairing for House. As a H/W tin-hat, I cheered the end of Need to Know and basically interpreted it as House deliberately hurting Stacy and choosing Wilson over her. I think that may be partially true, but the fact that he was still in pain over that decision through the rest of the season shows that in fact Stacy probably WAS the love of his life, at least the one he could acknowledge. (I do think Wilson was as pissy with Stacy as he was with Cuddy when she was involved with House. He IS a jealous bitch, but he also uses his relationships with women to hurt House, because it's the only way he can.)

I was really disgusted with the treatment of Julie in the 3rd series. Again, she had to be demonized to build up House/Wilson, but the idea that Wilson wasn't cheating on her is just utter bullshit, because he told Cameron he cheated on ALL his wives and even if you want to interpret it as just emotionally cheating with House, it doesn't give him a moral high ground.

I started turning against the schmoopy side of the fandom when they demonized Julie as firing the maid because she reminded her of Wilson. REALLY? I know it was only a plot point so the maid could move the box, but it was just so stupid and blatant and fanservicey.

So "giving" Wilson to Julie at the end is a very satisfying ending for me to redeem the character and undo the character assassination she was put through.

Thanks again for going on the journey.

I definitely agree with you here.

I used to find Stacy irritating as well, when I began watching the series, but upon watching Season 7, I definitely agree that Stacy was probably the love of his life, and I really do like her character. (I was actually rather happy that she was in the finale.)

I can see that viewpoint. I was always under the impression that he just didn't want Stacy or Cuddy to hurt House. I never considered that his relationships with women might be to hurt House. I sort of viewed it as his need to have a "normal" relationship, so that he could be viewed as normal. Of course, I'm not really sure. I've always felt that the series didn't go as deep with Wilson's character as they could have, but that's merely my opinion lol.

I recall Wilson telling Cameron he cheated on Julie, but I was never sure whether or not he cheated on Bonnie or Sam, or both. Sometimes, I had it in my mind that he cheated on all of them, sometimes I thought it was just Bonnie and Julie...It was difficult for me to keep the facts straight. (I also wasn't in fandom until right before Season 7).

Personally, I think that Wilson and Julie were just as guilty as the other. Julie was just the first to come clean.

From Spin:
Wilson: Have you... ever cheated? Well, I have. You want to punish him, good for you; but you can't do it without punishing the people who love him.
Cameron: Is that how you justified lying to your wives?
Wilson: I always told them.

Note the plural, "them"

(By the way-I was re-reading the transcript to verify the quote...turns out Jeff had....a thymoma!)

Thank you for looking that up for me.

Oh, did he have a thymoma? That's interesting!
