A few notes on the coverage....

I really miss seeing the full roll-call. It's political kitsch at its finest. Each state doing it's little schtick and trying to top the others, with it's nicknames, state accomplishments, and how it's proud and honored to give its "fill in number of votes" to the next President of the United States, etc etc.

I know it takes forever and there hasn't been any actual suspense about either party's nominee since (maybe) the 50's. There's no way modern viewers would ever be able to sit still for the whole thing. I assume they showed it all on C-SPAN (YAY C-SPAN, I Love you Brian Lamb!), so presumably I COULD have watched it all, but I was glued to MSNBC who ONLY showed Hawaii and Ohio. Hawaii as the place where Barack Obama was really, most sincerely born and OHIO for putting him over the top.

Even though I LOVE MSNBC, I'm still sort of nostalgic for the political conventions of my childhood. Gavel to Gavel coverage on all three networks (yes, only three plus PBS, who also did gavel to gavel), including ALL the day sessions, which used to piss off the entertainment divisions at the networks because the soap operas got pre-empted.

Of course, I missed seeing Keith Olbermann. Rachel did an awesome job and it was nice to see her keeping everyone in line, but DAMN IT, part of what made 2008 so great was Keith and Rachel et al.

I know, call the Waaaaahhhmbulance. I just like things the way I like them. If I can't have David Brinkley and John Chancellor (I'm a little young to have actually seen Huntley/Brinkley) I at least want my Keith and Rachel. *pouts*

It was great hearing "Don't Stop," but it also makes me sad that we'll probably never hear "Happy Days Are Here Again" at a Democratic National Convention. Or see awesome straw boaters. I also hear there might not be a balloon drop. I want a balloon drop. *more pouting*

While I'm feeling this cranky and obviously showing myself for the alter kocker that I am, I will at least point out that a gentleman greeted me while I was on my bike this morning by saying, "hello, young lady," which was odd, since he probably couldn't see much of my face with my bike helmet and sunglasses and I'm fairly sure he was ten years younger than me.
