1. Frank Furillo-Hill Street Blues
I loved Hill Street SO MUCH. I was fannish about it before I knew there was any kind of fandom beyond Star Trek. There was no internet to communicate with, but there was me and my friend Jennifer, and we talked about Hill Street and speculated about the characters. We quoted it and shipped before I knew the word ship. I shipped Frank Furillo and Joyce Davenport like WHOAH. I hated his ex-wife Fay for being a whiny bitch, but in retrospect I think she was written ultra-misogynistically. Anyway, I had a major crush on Frank Furillo, played so passionately by Daniel J. Travanti. Again with hind-sight he was a bit of a Gary Stu, even with the alcoholism, because he never slipped. JD did, but Frank was Mr. Perfect by comparison.
I don't know how I'd feel about it if I ran into that character today, with all my anger and cynicism, but back in 1981, I loved him madly.
2. Fagin-Oliver Twist (Novel and various adaptions, especially the musical Oliver!)
Clearly a villain, but a endlessly engaging character. Often played as gay, Jewish or some combination of both. The corrupter of the innocent and often quite self-pitying, but a survivor and a charmer in his own right. Originally written and depicted in the most anti-semitic way possible, but most of the great Fagins of stage and screen have over-come it.
I find him fascinating and see the "children" of Fagin in characters like John Hart and Mozzie and I'm always inherently on the side of those characters, rather than their victims.
I was lucky enough to see Rowan Atkinson in the part in the West End, and not only was he delightful, conniving and manipulative, I actively shipped him HARD with Bill Sykes. (It didn't hurt that Sykes was played by Burn Gorman.)
3. Faith-Buffy The Vampire Slayer
One of the primo bad-ass mofo bitches of all time. I'm not her biggest fan, and I don't think Eliza Dushku is all that and a bag of chips, but as with Spike, sometimes you need a character to be all bitchy and snarky and get in the face of the so-called "good guys." I also adore her relationship with the Mayor.
4. Falstaff-Plays of William Shakespeare
I've never understood the fascination with this character, especially not when I'm supposed to be feeling pathos because Prince Hal has to reject him. Sorry, he's annoying, a braggart, a drunk, and even when played by the great Orson Welles, not very appealing. I honestly don't get it. Maybe it's the corpulence that puts me off, which, yes I suppose could be construed as size-ism. I just dislike him whenever he shows up in the history plays and I think Merry Wives Of Windsor was pretty pointless too. (And I've seen All's Well That Ends Well performed at Shakespeare's Globe.)
5. Fiona - Four Weddings and a Funeral.
I love Fiona. I want to be Fiona in all her bitchy, classy, divine glory.
She gets the best lines, even if she doesn't get Charles and honestly, they're probably all better off that way. I love Carrie too. In fact, there's almost no one in the whole movie I dislike, with the possible exception of Ducklips and even she turned out sort of OK. But of them all, I really do adore Fiona. (Hell, even Jeremy Clarkson has a crush on Kristin Scott Thomas and I bet he got it in this movie.) Along with Holly Golightly, this is the character I am in my own Mary Sue fantasies. Because she's fucking PERFECT!
