I'm the daughter of two bank clerks, and I support this statement. Luckily in Europe you can get credit cards where you pay your full debt once a month and no interest ever. And luckily I have enough money I don't need to use my credit card as a loan.
Hm, until a few days ago I wasn't aware that in the US credit cards worked differently from here (here my credit card is just linked to my bank account and the charges are paid automatically, just as if I'd used my debit card lol - which is why I never understood the point of having a credit card in the first place, and the only reason I have one is for travelling). Then my colleague explained the difference to me. And I was like... uh.
And I've learned, by chatting with Americans on that site's forums, that in the US the credit card industry is even more usurious and underhanded than they are here in Canada. The stories I've heard would make one's hair curl.
