Sara Bareilles: Playing For Change

Mar 15, 2009 23:31

I was introduced to recording artist Sara Bareilles about a couple of years ago by Restless Aries (a friend who has been enjoying her live shows in LA all throughout college). This was a few months before she scored her first major hit (with "Love Song"), and I immediately became a fan of her talent.

So it didn't take much convincing to get me to Los Angeles last Friday in order to catch one of her special engagements on behalf of the Playing For Change charity at the Hotel Cafe nightclub...

Unfortunately, the performance took place at the end of a very difficult week for me personally, so I couldn't soak in her music as much as I would have liked. Futhermore, missing the opening acts of Raining Jane and Tony Lucca (I had to wait outside in the at-door ticket line), the large crowd (Sara's become too popular by now) and the camera Nazis (wouldn't let me record any video; although her most recent live concerts elsewhere are plastered all over YouTube) collectively placed a sizable dent in my entertainment for that evening as well.

Nevertheless, if you ever get the opportunity to hear Sara Bareilles live and in person, it's a chance that you can't pass up! (The radio and her digital tracks just doesn't do her voice justice!) Although she was fighting a cold this time, I detected no imperfections at all in her singing as she belted out many of her hits from the Little Voice album as well as her upcoming single "Free Ride" and even a few covers of U2's "Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" and Rihanna's "Umbrella" (then again, who hasn't covered that track?). My only regret is that she didn't get to play my favorite tune "Morningside" as she had also started late (just another let-down in a week full of them, I'm afraid).

A few more photos can be found on my Shutterfly site. (My sincere apologies for any blurriness but flash photography was not permitted at the event.)
