JUST FINISHED CRISIS CORE. CANNOT STOP TALKING IN CAPS. MAJOR SPOILERS BELOW CUT.
Okay, so, so, after years and years of living with Final Fantasy VII - one of the earliest games I remember playing was the original canon, Nobuo Uematsu's AC remix never really leaves my playlist, and in terms of fandom I've watched its fanon grow like a happy weed - I was afraid that Crisis Core would - like Dirge of Cerebus - kind of fuck up canon in a major way. Before Crisis wasn't terrible, from what the FEW JAPANESE TRANSLATIONS CAN TELL US SODS WHO DON'T HAVE MAGIC HANDPHONES, but as a Turk fan I was kind of disappointed that the only A.R-centric game ended up on a platform I had absolutely no access to - plus they dragged morality back into the foreground and kind of left this huge, jumping stop-gap for Tseng and the rest to leapfrog over through to game canon and then AC canon.

Crisis Core was as good a foil to all of the above as I can imagine a game could've been - Turks-wise, they were there, they were excellent and oh my fucking god now I don't know (BECAUSE THE DIRECTORS ARE EVIL) if it was really the Turks who gave the shot (PROBABLY NOT?!?!?) or if the Last Order "canon" was really CLOUD'S MAKO-FUCKED MEMORY. Tseng certainly still has "humanity" towards the end and 88 LETTERS OH GOD OH GOD 88 LETTERS I am going to go cry myself through a Last Order rewatch now.
ZACK. ZACK. I never really knew what the fuss about you was, BUT I TAKE THAT BACK. Holy shit, you are like the one VII character who makes sense in a way non-detached from real life! Not really, but kind of! You have parents! A home! A girlfriend! A job you like! And an ending that does the entirety of your storyline SOME JUSTICE!!

Reno and Rude in the FMV were perfect, so perfect, oh perfection your name is Reno being intelligent instead of a doofus, and comments that suit the Turks and fuck hot hot hot hot only WHY DO WE NEVER GET A CGI TSENG you lazy Squeenix bastards stop bleeding my heart out.
Ishimoto Takeharu does a good job remixing the Uematsu originals into pretty evocative and good gameplay background stuff, but nothing ever quite lives up to the original. The remixes were the gut-clenching-and-kicking parts; hearing Aerith's theme done over and then the Turk theme smoothened out brought me to dizzy heights, but the Crisis Core original theme in itself doesn't stick the way an Uematsu-done soundtrack sticks. Maybe it's the lack of gameplay, or maybe Ishimoto just does too much - the soundtrack covers an amazing amount of ground at the expense of overloading the player with 3 or 4 good tracks instead of 1 or 2 memorable themes.
