Back in the saddle.

As it turns out, Monday night is a wonderful time to do laundry. Instead of getting up early on the weekend to be sure to start my load before anyone else, I can do laundry when I'd normally be awake anyway, and it doesn't seem like anyone else does their laundry on Monday nights, so I don't have to fight for the good dryer, or sit on my washer so people don't move my stuff out so they can start their load.

Which brings me to tonight's subject. I've found a good way to kill the time waiting for the washer. Since the wash cycle is about a half hour, it's a good timer (for the moment) for hopping on the bicycle. Part of me hopes the people downstairs don't mind the half-hour droning of the trainer as I ride. Part of me remembers their frequent Sunday night parties lasting well past midnight. That part of me rides harder, making the droning louder.

I have the front wheel propped up on a stack of magazines to make it a little more even with the back wheel, elevated on the trainer. About halfway through my ride, the magazines shifted and dropped about half the stack. Startled, I squeezed both brake levers and stopped peddling before I really realized what had happened. After a slight pause during which the flywheel had not spun completely down, I released the brakes and began peddling again, deciding it wasn't worth stopping to fix the stack.

Part of me is glad my first reaction is to slam on the brakes. Part of me wonders why I did that, since the back wheel is locked in and very unlikely to contact the ground..

Some people spend their Christmas/Winter holiday building ginger bread houses. Some use the candy medium to recreate the great battles of Tolkien. Helms Deep and Minas Tirith during the Battle of Pelennor Fields
Even if you're not a Tolkien fan, this is still an impressive feat.
