I saw the Michael Jackson movie "This Is It today. I'm not a Jackson fan so I wasn't going to see it, plus I think it's just a scheme to cash in on his death, but a friend had a spare ticket so I went simple to get out of the house. I was pleasantly surprised by it and wasn't bored at all. Growing up, by the time I was old enough to know who Jackson was, he had already become the "Freak show" that the last few years of his life were but this movie really humanised him for me and I can now see why he is called the "King of Pop" even if I don't enjoy his music.
And speaking of movies, I watched Schindler's List (1993) for the first time last night. I was blown away. What a powerful movie. While I'm not a Jew, I am part of a religion that was also targeted and put into the concentration camps by the Nazis so it's always been more than a long ago historical event for me. Plus I really enjoy learning about history. But even with that connection, my feelings towards what happened have always been very academic. I know millions were killed but it is very easy to a say a figure and not truly understand the significance of it. But that changed last night. The movie showed in very graphic detail exactly what they went through. And it really hit home the suffering and the sheer amount of bloodshed that went on. I haven't been able to stop thinking about it. It has been a long time since a movie has made such an impression. I recommend anyone who hasn't seen it, to watch it (although there is graphic on screen violence).
