Yes, today I went out and picked blueberries. It was a fabulous day --not too warm and not too cool, with the sun high but a soft breeze blowing. All I had to worry about was avoiding the bear scat which seemed to be everywhere as I roamed about the meadows, looking for clumps of berry bushes which had not yet felt the ravages of the aforementioned ursines.
Two hours' worth of picking has resulted in approximately three cups of blueberries, which ought to be more than enough to make a cheesecake, some scones, and perhaps some pancakes as well. But the real joy for me was in being out of doors, in the freshness of the day, revelling in the scents of life all around me as I alternately roamed the meadows and breathed in cow parsnip, blueberries, and willow, or crept about on hands and knees under the stunted fir trees and gaped at the brilliant colors of the mushrooms there.
I leave Alaska in a week. I am thankful beyond words that I was able to pick berries this year, before I have to go.
