I was going to forward this to Freaky to add to his file of election-related superdickery, but I got a little ranty...

Priest: No communion for Obama supporters
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/27705755/

"Voting for a pro-abortion politician when a plausible pro-life alternative exits constitutes material cooperation with intrinsic evil, and those Catholics who do so place themselves outside of the full communion of Christ's Church and under the judgment of divine law."

*rage*

Plausible pro-life alternative? Are you fucking with me? Apparently this asshat has a short memory, since McCain was pro-choice when he ran for president the first time eight years ago. I'm not saying a guy can't change his mind, but when you consider all the other stuff that he's changed his mind on, it ought to give you a little pause there, Reverend. I believe bearing false witness is also on the Lord's Top Ten List.

Also, would you let a dude who puts women's health issues in dismissive lil' air quotes make health policy decisions for your mom? How about your sister? Daughter/ neighbor/ girlfriend/ wife/ any woman you care about? Sheesh.

Fortunately, even other Catholics disagree, and are calling him out:

"Sister Mary Ann Walsh, spokeswoman for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, said she had not heard of other churches taking this position in reaction to Obama's win. A Boston-based group that supports Catholic Democrats questioned the move, saying it was too extreme."

The nuns are saying you're doing it wrong. NUNS. Time to put the crack pipe down and reconsider a few things.

"Father Newman is off-base," said Steve Krueger, national director of Catholic Democrats. "He is acting beyond the authority of a parish priest to say what he did. ... Unfortunately, he is doing so in a manner that will be of great cost to those parishioners who did vote for Sens. Obama and Biden. There will be a spiritual cost to them for his words."

Possibly a monetary cost, if there is a Bob in the sky, as using your church to endorse specific candidates will get your tax-exempt status revoked. It's happened before.

---------------
When I was looking up tax-exemptions and churches, I found a lot of stuff about Prop 8. I had a weird thought: For people that don't approve of gay stuff, the Yes on 8 crowd sure does talk a lot about homosexuals getting rammed down their throats. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

jerks, politics, in the news
