On Writing

Do you ever have an idea for a fic where, maybe after a bit of searching, when you hit on it you just grin and nod to yourself and think, perfect? I love that feeling. I've missed that feeling this November and beginning of December, since school and especially finals took over my life. Yesterday I had that feeling twice with my Glee fic that ( Read more... )

Ideas I'd wished I'd had for the bsg_epics discussion on characters you don't like to or don't feel comfortable writing
Now, you've gotten me in the mood to talk writing. And we can do that right here in your journal!

I'm wondering if I've ever written a story from the POV of a character I didn't like. Not really. Sometimes I write a story from a character I don't know well. That can be so hard. But through telling the story or making the vid I always find some love for them or I couldn't do it. Gaius Baltar is a perfect example. I didn't understand him or like him much while watching the show. For like, three years. But I made my vid and became convinced that Felix loved him so I had to try and understand Gaius if only for Felix's sake. I'm not sure if I've written an entire fic from Gaius' point of view, though. A teeny bit but it's an interesting question. You have to know a character well, or want to know a character well to get inside their head to spend thousands of words writing and thinking about them.

Do characters sound ( ... )

I agree--I don't think I could get through a fic in the head of a character I couldn't find some kind of common ground with ( ... )

I think I usually use the out-to-in/classical acting approach, but thinking about it in that way might be useful to get inside certain characters with very thick masks/filters.It is so hard to write people with thick masks/filters! I wrote Kendra/Lee once and it was so hard! I had difficulty writing Lee at the time and Kendra! Talk about a thick filter! I had to write it from Lee's POV but it took me months to write that little fic. And yes, I wrote about Kendra through Lee's observations of her and things she said. It was still skewed, though. Lee wasn't completely objective about her ( ... )

I am still quite excited to see Glee, and especially Hudmel, fic from you! :D

Oh, the Kara Poof. There is a reason I never try to write anything involving explaining her (unless it's in parody) because it's too stupid to deal with. I give props to everyone who comes up with explanations, though.

There is going to be more Picture Perfect!Verse?? :D! That is my happy face. That right there.

Yes, there will most definitely be more Picture Perfect! I've got three ideas fairly well thought out (the girls catch a childhood disease that's really serious for adults, like chicken pox, and since Felix never had it, Louis is left quarantined alone with them in their quarters for ten days; Tabitha was a student in Laura's school on New Caprica; and a big How They Got to Earth story), one that I have a vague idea for, and one that's basically written and is kind of a pornbattly deleted scene from the How They Got to Earth story, unless it ends up fitting into the main story better than I think it will. With those, Culture Shock, and the Glee fic, I'm going to be busy writing these next few weeks...

Ooooh. Yes, now I am definitely excited for the PP verse! Hooray break!

So, did you want me to link you to the site with all the Glee eps, or do you have your own magic ways?

A little birdie told me I'm getting Season 1 on DVD for Christmas, and I'm trying to ween myself off illegal downloads (this whole character and fitness for bar admission has me a little paranoid right now), so thanks anyway, but I think I'm good. :)

Ohhh, BSG writers, made of so much fail. @@ Really, you make good points on the lameness of the wrap-up, coming from supposed professionals. (RDM has special snowflakes just like Adama.)

I give them a lot of credit for creating a lot of interesting ideas to play with. I just wish they'd stuck the landing.
