You missed the drama? Lucky. Here's a quick rundown of what happened:
1) A couple weeks before Comiccon and during the concert tour, somebody leaks that Harry, Darren, and Chord were all negotiating for promotions to series regular, and while Harry and Darren had gotten the bump-up in status, Chord hadn't.
2) Cue confused fandom with a slice of said fandom outraged, too. Does this mean he's going to remain a guest star who's in almost every episode, like Harry was? Or does this mean he's gone for good?
3) Ryan Murphy gives interview indicating that ball is in Chord's court, and that' they're willing to bring him back on for some of the front half of the season and will reevaluate his promotion to regular at mid-season. Kinda makes it sound like Chord is the bad guy/recalcitrant one. Nobody in fandom really buys this, because it's Ryan Murphy talking.
4) Chord says thanks but no thanks and bows out. (Later this summer, people decide this may have been a really smart call. See below.)
5) Also going on during the Chord negotiations, Murphy drops hints in various interviews that he's going to be graduating some of the cast. He makes it sound like Sam is going to be one of the younger kids who sticks around, which makes the whole what's up with Chord thing even more confusing.
6) The day before Emmy nominations come out, Ryan Murphy does an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. He's very, "People think we're planning a spinoff? Huh. We totally weren't laying the groundwork for a spinoff with that scene in NYC." Then he drops the real bomb: Finn, Rachel, and Kurt are seniors this season, and that they will not be on the show in any capacity next season.
7) Fandom loses its collective shit.
8) Apparently Murphy does not communicate well with his cast, because Chris Colfer has to do "Congrats on the Emmy nom!" interviews that inevitably include the question, "So you found out you were fired on Twitter?"
9) Fandom speculates wildly about this being a ploy on Murphy's part to pressure FOX into green-lighting a Rachel/Finn/Kurt/(Blaine?) NYC-based spinoff.
10) Media sides with actors and strongly criticizes Murphy for his weird decision and tactless way of presenting it.
11) Murphy attempts triage with more interviews and ends up looking like even more of an ass by 1) suggesting that Lea and Chris were in the wrong for being so surprised because they knew about his plans all the time, and 2) admitting that he'd forgotten to tell Cory. Oops.
12) Media and fandom chase after Murphy with torches and pitchforks.
