Keep calm and carry on

The unlawful imprisonment of the three brave girls for something that's not criminalized in the Russian law (it sanctions religious offense with up to 20 euros penalty) clearly sends a message to others daring to oppose the persistent elevation of the morally bankrupt Russian Orthodox church to the ideological dictatorship, not unlike the Soviet propaganda system.

Exposing the Church hypocrisy, criticizing its symbiosis with the corrupt authoritarian regime, denouncing their joint offensive against basic human rights and freedoms will put you in jail, if you're inventive enough to make your protest noticed. Church leaders, enjoying luxurious lifestyle and generous donations of state property, are surrounded with esteemed reverence and prophet-like worshiping by the state propaganda channels - in return, as one might expect, for timely instructions on how the God wants nice children to vote. They're also a huge help in spreading a newly fashionable brain-dead nationalistic ideology based on 18th century rural values mixed with anti-Western conspiracies, the best Putin came up so far to distract the public attention from the increasingly impotent bureaucracy, rotting remains of Soviet technological infrastructure putting everyone's life in danger and the vanishing scientific legacy that yields to mass ignorance and superstition.

But if history is any reference, churches that embrace dictators end up in well-deserved pettiness after the regime falls one way or another, which is probably where things are moving in Russia ever so fast.
