Chapter Four

I awoke with a start. I was having a bad dream. I dreamt that there was a crouched, shivering figure alone in an empty room. They needed someone so badly just then. I was stuck in another room unable to help them. I think I was being blocked by some feeling inside me. The person screamed in the dream. That is what woke me. I was in cold sweats. My dark violet braids were sticking to my back. I shook my head to clear my thoughts. I had never had a dream like that. I needed to calm down for a bit before I went back to sleep.

I got out of bed and went to the kitchen. I was about to open the fridge when my keitai rang on the counter. I furrowed my eyebrows. Who would be calling me at this time of night? I answered it before I looked to see who was calling. I was still half asleep.

“Kaoru desu.” The oddest sound came over the phone when I answered. I sounded like someone was choking. A deep breath sounded also.

“Kaoru, it’s Toshiya. I need you to help me! Please!” The violence of his ‘please’ made me flinch.

“What’s wrong Toshiya?”

“I was on a date and…” I growled in irritation.

“Look, I don’t have the patience for your dating problems. I am going back to bed.”

“No wait! Don’t hang up Kaoru!” his voice was cracking from strain. I held back from hanging up. I should be a good
Leader and friend; I needed to hear him out.

“Okay, what’s wrong?”

“I was on a date tonight. We were taking a short cut to a new club. All of a sudden a pair of muggers began to rob us. They took everything off of us. After they ran away my date hit me and said he thought it was a set up. That I was some sort of whore who robbed men. He started to beat me up but I got away. I am stranded at a gas station Kaoru. I have nothing on me! I had to beg the store clerk to let me use the phone. I would have called someone else but no one is answering. I had to ask this of you but I really need your help! Can you come and get me? I am so sorry…I…”

I cut him off. He was about to get hysterical. “Just tell me where you are, Toshiya. I will come for you.” I listened and wrote down his directions. I wasn’t too far. After hanging I threw on a pair of jeans and headed out to get Toshiya.

I parked my car in the dingy parking lot of the gas station. I sat there a moment and reflected. I did not feel mad at Toshiya for getting me up and asking for my help. I did not even feel irritated. I actually felt worried. I wanted to make sure he was safe for tonight. I opened my door and got out of the car. I opened the door and I saw a blur; then I felt a body hurl against me and hug me tightly. Toshiya was murmuring his frantic thank you into my ear. I managed to untangle him from me and stand back a little. He looked really rough. His clothing was torn and he looked grimy. There was a bruise on his cheek. That is where the guy probably hit him.

“Do you need to go to the hospital? Did you call the police?” Good, old sensible me. Toshiya shook his head and then nodded. I suppose it was a negative to the first question and positive to the last.

“I just want to go home.” He finally said quietly.

“Let me take you home then.” I led the way back to my car. When Toshiya settled into the passenger seat he curled almost into a ball. I started the engine and sighed.

“Do you need anything?” I ask, hoping for a bone to be thrown in my direction.

“I think I will be okay. I mean, the cops are looking for the guys. They call them the “Date Night bandits” or some lame shit. Kaoru, thank you.” He was looking at me when he uttered that last statement.

“It’s no big deal.” I stared up at the red light ominously. It was 3 a.m. in the morning. Most smart or lucky people are at home asleep.

“Yes, it was. I did not think you would come. I am not your favorite person.” He was staring at me with a straight gaze. I felt really nervous. I had to concentrate on the road so I could not look at him. Yet, I felt that gaze.

“I would not leave anyone in that situation.” Was the response I finally came up with.

“This is the parking area for my complex.” He pointed to a small parking deck next to a condo area. As I pulled into a guest parking space I cleared my throat.

“I will walk you to your apaato,” he looked at me as if I said something really shocking. In this case it was. He bit his lip and got out of the car. I walked right beside him the whole way up to his apaato. He slid his key into the lock with a shaky hand. He leaned against the door suddenly pressing his cheek against the solid wood.

“I’m so tired.” He suddenly groaned out. His eyes shut tightly. His face contorted into a grimace.

“I think a hot shower and a good night’s sleep will cure that.” I sounded like my mother.

“It is not that kind of tired. I am tired of feeling like I am not worth anything to anyone.” I could see tears leaking out of his eyes.

“You are valued, Toshiya,” I replied back softly.

“I am not talking about being a band member or a friend. I am talking about being loved.”
