Chapter 1: The long vacation trip
Everything will come to an end. This is an undebatable fact of life. Life, in itself, will eventually come to an end as well. That’s why people must cherish each moment of their life and learn to live the most of it. Even if life can be hard at times, people must always strive and get up no matter how many times they fall.
You only live once. That’s why you should live the most of it.
And that was probably what he was thinking when he agreed to a vacation invitation extended by none other than Fujikawa Kazuo. That and another person.
‘You should take a vacation once in a while. Take this short break off. Once we go back to our scrubs, we won’t get as much time off. We’ll be busier than ever.’
He sighed, remembering the determined look on her face as she (probably) try to come up with more backup reasons on her head in case he refused. He decided to humor her and save her from such troubles.
“I still can’t believe you’re actually coming with us.” Hiyama Mihoko, the ever sharp-tongued one, said as she stood in front of the ever stoic Kousaku. He only raised an eyebrow at her and gave her a silent shrug.
“I was downright rejected when it was me who asked.” Fujikawa Kazuo added, checking his mobile phone.
“A man can change his mind.” Kousaku replied in his usual calm and collected manner.
“I wonder what is the reason for this man’s change of mind.” Mihoko said, her eyes shining with amusement. Always a danger sign, Kousaku feigned a cough.
Mihoko’s smile became wider as she turned and caught a sight of someone over his shoulder. He need not turn to know the reason for that look.
“Shiraishi!” Mihoko called, crossing her arms, “You’re late.”
Kousaku crossed his arms as well as he watched her ran to their direction. He made a barely recognizable nod which she answered with a bright smile. Or probably the smile was for Mihoko?
“Gomen.” Megumi’s smile turned apologetic as she turned to Mihoko. “My mother won’t let me go until she finished my obento. She made enough for everyone.” she explained, pointing at the rather huge bulge on one of her two bags.
“Since you’ve brought food, you’re forgiven.” Mihoko’s expression softened and she smiled. At Megumi’s nod, she turned to Kazuo, “So we’re still waiting for someone?”
“I believe Saejima-san will be coming too.” Megumi answered. “I heard Fujikawa-sensei saying the other day.”
“Hmmm…” Mihoko turned to Kazuo, only to frown as she saw his current situation - he was currently standing there, looking at his mobile phone with a very anxious look on his face.
“Is there anything wrong?” Megumi asked worriedly.
Mihoko turned to peek at his mobile phone, only to roll her eyes upon figuring out the bespectacled man’s dilemma, “Just call her, you stalker.”
Kazuo’s face turned beet red at that comment. He turned hotly at Mihoko and replied, “Don’t call me that, you repeater!”
Mihoko’s face turned as red. Among the four interns, she was the only one who will be repeating a year - as a punishment for that unsigned DNR incident. She glared at Kazuo, “Just hit the call button!” snatching his phone from him and dialing Haruka’s number.
“Give it back!”
“I’m helping you call her, you stalker!”
“Repeater!”
“Stalker!”
Megumi blinked as she stood in between her fellow doctors. She turned to Kousaku, “Should we stop them?”
“Just let them be.” Kousaku shrugged, and turned to look away from the bickering doctors. Megumi, however, only gave him a frown. She turned back to Mihoko and Kazuo - probably to try and stop them from arguing. Kousaku sighed and spoke in a cool tone, “The train’s coming.”
The statement proved effective. Mihoko and Kazuo seems to have forgotten their argument for an instant and searched for the train. When they found none, they both frowned at Kousaku.
“I see no train.” Mihoko pouted, crossing her arms. Kousaku only feigned a cough.
“Ah! Saejima-san.” Megumi smiled as she saw the nurse.
She watched as Kazuo welcomed Haruka and offered to help her with her bag. Mihoko only rolled her eyes as she followed the two.
“I thought we should let them be.” Megumi commented as she stood beside Kousaku, watching her three friends.
“I thought you wanted to stop them.” was Kousaku’s cool reply as his mouth twitch to a small smile. Megumi returned the smile and soon joined the others.
***
The five took the train to a popular resort in Okinawa. It was a treat from Kazuo’s patient who was so grateful for the ‘…kind doctor tending to me, I thought I should invite you to our family resort.’ Kazuo in turn extended the invitation (at first to Haruka only) but since Mihoko heard it, the invitation was extended to his fellow interns as well.
“Here, my mother prepared it.” Megumi smiled as she opened a box full of rice cakes and offered it to everybody.
“Itadakimasu!” Mihoko smiled, “Hmm… Your mother’s good.”
“Yes.” Haruka nodded, pushing Kazuo back of his seat to peek at Megumi. Then with a smile, she pointed, “So what’s in that other box?”
Megumi’s face reddened at the question. She lets a rather sheepish smile and pushed the other box beneath one bag, “It’s nothing.”
“Hmmm….” Mihoko and Haruka both nodded their heads, and both were wearing the same suspicious looks on their faces. Kazuo blinked, wondering what the commotion was about. Kousaku raised an eyebrow as the two women threw amused looks at him. He shrugged.
The trip was spent with little chitchats and some card games by the doctors and nurse. Well, Kousaku never participated in such games and only contributed a word or two in their conversations. Just as usual, he just sat there, listening and watching them as his companions do their stuff. He had learned to tolerate them, no matter how childish they can be some time (particularly Kazuo and, at times Mihoko). He had learned to consider them friends.
“Aizawa-sensei…” He blinked as Megumi whispered to him. He was surprised that she was still awake when the others are already dozing off.
“Aa.” he gave her a brief nod, wondering why she was suddenly whispering to him when the others can’t possibly hear her now.
She bit her lip and looked down, he raised an eyebrow as he noted how her ears had turned red behind her some hair strands. “Anou…” she took a deep breath and took out something from underneath her bag. It was the same box that Haruka had noticed earlier.
“I…. made… some…. rice cakes too…” she said, placing the box on his lap. She then quickly turned away from him and focused her eyes on the hands on her lap. Kousaku blinked from her and then to the box on his lap.
“Aa. Arigato.” Kousaku nodded as he opened the box. He had to smile as he stared at her rice cakes and its obvious difference from the one her mother did. “Itadakimasu.”
He took a bite and he could see her watching for his reaction. He made sure that the others were still sleeping before giving her a smile, “Aa, not bad.”
Megumi pouted a bit but nevertheless smiled. She took a rice cake from Kousaku and tried it as well. She made a face, “Mou. Too much salt.”
“Aa.” he nodded, keeping a straight face - teasing her.
“You’re not supposed to agree.” Megumi threw a tissue paper at him. He gave her another smile.
“Is that so?” Kousaku took another bite, “This is the most delicious thing that I have tried then.”
“Don’t tease me.”
And they spent the whole trip like that - or so, until one of their friends showed signs of waking up.
To be continued…
