The 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference or Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC, more commonly known as COP28, was the 28th United Nations Climate Change conference, held from 30 November until 12 December 2023 at Expo City, Dubai.
I'm trying to make sense of the 21-page
conference agreement, and it is just a bunch of laywerly-sounding gobbledygook that takes the form of a contract without containing an actual contract.
All along my main criticism of all these United Nations conferences and international agreements is that they are not enforceable. A contract is enforceable, it states exactly what each party will do, and what will happen if they don't. This document doesn't state exactly what each party will do, and nothing will happen to anybody if they ... don't do what it doesn't say they will do LOL.
But governments and organizations will now trumpet this "agreement" as a "breakthrough" and blah blah blah while we continue to emit more greenhouse gases this year than ever before, and 2024 will probably break emissions records again (unless we have a recession). So far we've only reduced emissions temporarily during economic recessions. These voluntary joint statements are not accomplishing anything.
COP28 is yet another example of "greenwashing" -- a form of advertising or marketing spin in which green PR and green marketing are deceptively used to persuade the public that an organization's products, aims, and policies are environmentally friendly.
