back to the 1850s

Divisions among Republicans continue to paralyze the House; we haven't been without a Speaker for this long (three weeks) since the 1850s when the US was about to split in two over whether or not to expand slavery into the Territories.

I can't help but wonder whether three weeks ago is when the 21st Century US Empire began to collapse.

Nobody seems to be panicking about it. The financial markets are orderly. People aren't demonstrating in the streets. But the only reason things are orderly is because the previous Speaker sacrificed his job to pass a debt ceiling increase and then a 45-day federal budget.

And now with a four-way presidential race nobody is polling as high as Lincoln did in 1860. He took 39.8% of the popular vote, both Trump and Biden are polling below that.

Maybe we're reaching the end of the post-1968 two-party system. Perhaps something else will replace it after 2024.
