LJ is still here ... and I love my new laptop!!!

My new Windows gaming laptop is definitely powerful enough to play the older games I already own, without breaking a sweat. I've already bought a bunch more legacy games from GOG, some for as little as $1.49, so now I own 30 legacy games via GOG. I'm going to play my old games!!! I'm so happy!!! I can actually play them!!!

Games like SimCity, Civilization, Railroad Tycoon, Wasteland, Fallout -- often several versions of each game.

It's a midrange gaming laptop, I'm not sure it can play the very latest games like Elden Ring, but I already have an Xbox for that, signed into T's account, with many many up-to-date games. I like older games, that don't require much firepower, but it's just too darn difficult to run them on my 7-year-old Mac. Supposedly I can stream all my purchased Xbox games on this laptop also, but I haven't tried that yet.

Turns out this new laptop has TWO video cards (GPUs) in it, both AMD Radeon and NVIDIA GeForce. I was confused about this, but the first is lower-powered and the second is higher-powered so the CPU decides which GPU to route each request to depending on how much processing speed the request requires. If this causes a problem for a particular game, I can lock that game to a specific video card.

I figured out how to share files from my Mac to Windows, although the security seems horrendously poor -- guess my password and you have access to all my files over WiFi. I think I'll have to set up another "user" on my Mac that only has access to my porn.

I haven't tried it with an external video monitor yet ...

The only issue on the horizon with my old Mac is that I'm steadily chewing up more hard drive space as I buy more music and apps, download more porn, and save more pics/documents. I'm down to 21% capacity left on my 1TB drive, which isn't a crisis yet, but requires occasional monitoring -- if I decide I'm never using an app delete it, never watching a video delete it. I've got 240GB of porn videos. [I increased my capacity from 18% to 21% just now, found a huge pile of podcast episodes I don't need saved to my drive.]

Eventually I'll have to spring for a new 2TB drive. I could upgrade the drive myself for about $400. Buying a newer Mac with a 2TB drive would require at least $2,000. If I upgrade myself, I could move the 1TB drive to my backup Mac, which currently has only 512GB (plenty for what I use it for). Then my backup Mac would have a snapshot copy of all my files as of that date.

I believe with most newer Macs you cannot upgrade the hard drive. For a while Apple made it practically impossible to upgrade components yourself, my Macs are still old enough that I can usually go in and fix things myself.

Well, my work day is about to begin -- and the pest control tech is supposed to return to take care of the squirrel(s) by 10am. I'll probably be stuck working until 5pm, but then I'll have the entire weekend to myself!!!!
