In the global rivalry between China, Russia, and the US, you don't have to pick a side. Disliking the US doesn't mean you have to boost China or Russia. Disliking Russia or China doesn't mean you have to be a US fanboy/girl/x. It's OK to oppose the imperialism and environmental destruction of all three countries simultaneously ( Read more... )

Over here, patriotism has become strongly linked wo the Nazism the Third Reich practiced back then.
It's even very exceptional among European countries - like, for example, in France people have no problem being patriotic because this is tied to Republicanism. This is a result of their history. French people overthrew their government a couple of times in their history, and so helped getting the country progress forward. This makes out a positive association that could sink into collective memory.

So, that's why you have, as only people talking of "patriotism", those from the far right. Because they're minded in the tradition of the Third Reich's policies.

An exception from that is East Germany because East Germany was a different state and country for decades (the GDR). One which was not in the mental tradition of the Third Reich.
And, even in my mind it's like carved in - patriotism doesn't have to mean "Nazi" automatically. This is a result of that.

People in East Germany today aren't very patriotic for this country now, the FRG, because it has swallowed down the country they've been born and raised in, the elder even already worked in and studied in..
And West Germany did that in such a way like when an annexation happens - tearing down everything that had existed before, telling people constantly how to read past events and what their former country was like.
But people have their own memories and they think in parts "no, what you say is not true".
So... a country that constantly thinks it needs to lecture you, while it tore down most of your life - do you seriously feel patriotism for that?
No. More likely you have it. Hate it to death.

Ah, and by the way - Merkel's solo action of letting all the refugees in is very, VERY negatively-receipted about her reign still today, if you listen to positions outside the official government wording.

It's because the goverment in Berlin meanwhile already lives in its own universe and doesn't have connection with the reality anymore, what the country truly looks like, how run down it is structurally in the details. Constantly making decisions that don't suit the true situation on the ground.
