Was listening to a podcast episode debating the age-old question of whether the Left should try to (1) take over the Democratic Party or (2) create a viable Party of the Left.

I'd put it that way that you have to get the mighty and rich shall fear the people they govern and try to fool overall.
If they're afraid, if they don't meet their demands enough, they'll be coming for them, then they'll make sure to keep them happy.
That way you can tear some social improvements out of their bodies...
(Mind you, this state of fear has to be a constant thing. - If the militance fades, the mighty and rich start to take previous achivements away again silently. Just because they see they can do it without receiving a serious resonance.)

You can even apply this rule to any system or way of ruling.

The guest - author Chris Hedges - told a story about the peak of the anti-war protests in 1971, when the White House was literally surrounded by angry demonstrators, and President Nixon was actually afraid of them, personally afraid they were coming for him.
