"Experts say the sharing of nude selfies and other sexually explicit messages among teens and tweens has only gotten worse."
Teens are horny, teens have bodies, what the fuck do you expect? As a culture we act like kids having sex is the ultimate wrong, when that's exactly what their bodies want to do. Every animal wants to mate after puberty. It's why we're all here!
Sex can be risky, with unwanted pregnancy and STDs, but if we normalized safe sex as a good thing for everybody at all ages,
And we worry about consent, that teens aren't mature enough to consent. But they're horny, what are we going to do about this -- we teach them that being horny is bad, and then we all carry that badness into adulthood and feel shame about sex long after our shame should've expired.
Sexual assault is horrible, but the shame we pile upon sex makes it way more difficult for the victims, not only were they assaulted, but they feel shame for having their "private" parts violated.
Punch me in the face and I don't have the same level of shame as if you sexually assaulted me with your penis. Our cultural negativity toward sex makes it more difficult for survivors of sexual assault to heal.
I hope my nieces and nephews are sharing sexually explicit messages, it would mean they're alive.
