"The science should not stand in the way of this."

“The president has said unmistakably that he wants school to reopen,” White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany said at a briefing Thursday. “When he says open, he means open and full, kids being able to attend each and every day at their school. The science should not stand in the way of this.”

We could, instead, be using science to accomplish this. But it has already been clear, prior to COVID-19, that Republicans view science as the enemy.

Science would show that global warming is a real threat to the human race.

Science would show that 400 million guns are a public health threat, and that people who own guns are more likely to die from gun violence than people who do not own guns.

Science would show that pollution is also a public health threat, and that pollution regulations save lives.

Science would show that the fetus cannot feel pain until the third trimester.

Science would show that homosexuality occurs frequently in nature and is not an abomination.

I could go on.

Decades ago, a friend of mine who was a scientist said something like, you may not care about science, but science cares about you. Try walking in front of a speeding train and expecting it to overcome its momentum and inertia before it strikes you. We all make use of science in our daily lives, yet Republicans draw the line at allowing science to interfere with their beliefs and desires. It's why I often complain about how in this country we aren't interested in actually solving the problems we face. Instead we just want to argue with each other and take turns occupying the high ground in between elections.

If, after Biden wins, he puts us back in the Paris Climate Agreement and brings back environmental regulations -- it will just be a matter of time until the next Republican President does the opposite. We cannot fix our problems this way. Not when 40+% of the population views science as the enemy.

We suck.
