As people in the US usually only care about "Americans", the first death from COVID-19 in the US will probably wake us from our slumber of denial.
I wish it would be the only death in the US, but there will be more. How many more depends on what we all do about it. If we do nothing, the number of deaths will double every week until we hit maximum sometime this summer.
But we won't do nothing.

One of my LJ friends complained about how people only seem to care about the effects of COVID-19 on the economy. I think this will change now that "Americans are dying".

It's not gonna be as bad as the 1918 flu pandemic. It won't be a zombie apocalypse. But it's probably going to be the worst pandemic of our lifetimes. And it will cause a recession -- so some businesses will go bankrupt, many people will lose their jobs.
Maybe afterward, we'll all care more about providing universal health care and a better social safety net for the unemployed. And maybe we'll all care less about tax cuts and stock market indices. And maybe we'll all respect viruses and bacteria a bit more for the risks they pose to our way of life.
