the self-esteem society

There's something wacky about the prominence of self-esteem in our hyper-individualized deregulated market economy. I agree with Albert Ellis that self-esteem is at best a myth, and at worst a harmful delusion.

The so-called "self esteem" that many people carry around in this form of society like the West has is mostly an illusion, renewed by own empty talking oneself into believing something that people actually don't have because they all buy the same shit out of a thin sphere, they all think the same out of a narrow sphere, and they all live the same out of a small sphere.
Being gay, being a metalhead, being a radical political activist? Still all of them want kids, houses to live in and drive expensive cars. Only 1% of all of these relinquish anything out of these categories. But about 99% of them call themselves "individual" and brag about which "individually-designed" lives they lead.

I grew up during the push for self esteem in schools. I remember singing " I am smart, I am special, I am somebody!" in the school gymnasium.

... I don't think the effort impacted my actual self esteem, respect, or love.
