a no-drama federal budget extension?

Sep 16, 2011 10:22

After all the weeks-long drama about avoiding a federal government shutdown back in the spring, and then the weeks-long federal debt ceiling drama over the summer, I was expecting another weeks-long drama over the new federal budget for the fiscal year starting October 1.

But by all accounts the Republicans and Democrats on Capitol Hill are quietly preparing an uncontroversial temporary budget plan for October 1. They aren't anywhere close to having a budget for the full year, but at least they'll have a stopgap measure ready on time. Or so they all say now.

I guess there is always a chance they'll find something to disagree about before it passes, but it seems Congress has lost its appetite for showdown dramas, at least for now.
