Now my record for completed online games against strangers is 1-3. I was randomly assigned the Aztecs, and I made good use of their strengths in the early game, using my starting bonus gold to rush a warrior unit, catching the Mongol capital city undefended, and earning enough gold from conquered barbarian tribes to get my free settlers unit and build a third city. I was about to discover one of the ancient artifacts when the other human players quit and let me win. I guess they decided they didn't have a chance to win, so why drag it out.
So far the online games seem 100% geared toward early military victories. You can't just pull into your turtle shell, build a few cities, and hope for a technology, culture, or economic victory. If you try that, one of the other human players will start rolling a domination snowball down the mountain and will crush you with tank armies.
