Замечательное о Моммзене: "His power of concentration was often remarked on. There was an occasion in May 1885 which caused some scandal. He was using a manuscript in the Vatican library when Pope Leo XIII happened to enter the room. As was customary, every reader stood up, except Mommsen, who failed to notice him. Diplomatic intervention was required to smooth over offended sensibilities" (C. de Hamel, The Posthumous Papers of the Manuscript Club, London 2022, 400).
