Background: Blue was born and raised in a little place aptly named “Pallet Town” after the cleanliness in the air and the fact that it was like a blank, untouched pallet compared to the rest of the world. He was raised, along with his sister Daisy, but their Grandfather and leading pokemon researcher, Professor Oak, so by the time Blue was ten, he was more than ready to get to training his own team and battling the gyms his grandfather spoke so highly about. It was during these younger years that he befriended a boy that, literally, lived right next door to him: Red. However, this friendship was short-lived, because it didn’t take long for Blue to become absolutely obsessed with his “dream”, to the point where he became nothing more than the resident smart-ass bully.

So really, when it came time for his Grandfather to hand out pokémon to the trainer hopefuls of the town, Blue was excited. He just knew the “special” pokémon his grandfather had been hinting at would go to him. So when Professor Oak made the move to give that pokémon to Red? Well, Blue just couldn’t stand it. Jealously, he moved forward to snatch the pokéball from his grandfather and take the pokémon for himself, vowing to be a better trainer than Red would ever be. And so, Blue gained his first pokémon, a sweet, rare little thing named Eevee: the pokémon with the ability to evolve into a multitude of different types.
Almost immediately after Blue claimed his pokémon, Red was given Oak’s leftover pokémon, the troublesome Pikachu. Amused by his rival’s bad luck, Blue stuck around to goad Red into a little match to start things off with. He just... never thought that he’d lose. Picking himself up from the loss and yelling something about beginners luck, Blue ran off into the wilds, determined to be the first of their little generation to ace the gym challenge of Kanto and take on the Pokémon League and make himself champion.

So while Red ran around and dealt with the Team Rocket threat to the good people of the world and the innocent wild pokémon - and while he blathered about bonds and stupid, silly things like that - Blue concentrated on catching and training a diverse team. After all, he couldn’t bother himself to taking the time to SAVE people when there was a title to claim, right? And while he ran into Red time and time again, usually when the other boy was emerging from a long, tiring fight in a seemingly endless cave, each of their battles was close, with a split-second, desperate move naming one of them the temporary victor, in the end, Blue made it to the League first.

However, his victory was short-lived, because before his grandfather got there to congratulate him on the win, Red came along and, fairly quickly, defeated him. Humiliated and frustrated, Oak only added insult to injury, telling Blue that he hadn’t quite realized the truth behind being a great trainer, and that he wasn’t quite ready to be as strong as he could be. Which, really, was evident by the fact that Blue broke into the Team Rocket HQ to see if he could find a suitable challenge, but left without taking care of any of the goons, leaving the corporation to wreak havoc on the world. In other words, leaving it for Red to take care of. But despite the bitterness Blue felt, he still followed his grandfather’s advice and left for the Sevii islands to capture and train new pokemon in hopes of taking down Red the next time he saw him.

Blue then took his new pokémon with him on another journey, one that eventually landed him with the duty of taking over the Viridian City Gym from Giovani, the ex-leader of the now defunct Team Rocket. He spent the next few years traveling Kanto some more, leveling up his pokémon and making sure to keep his reputation of the “elite” of the Kanto leaders. After all, he was the only one that didn’t have a specific type specialization. His pokémon covered all types and made up for each other’s weaknesses. While his empathy towards pokémon hadn’t really changed outwardly, he was considered a practically undefeated gym leader, despite his age. However, that could be partly because he was pretty hard to find usually. After all, he spent most of his time on the cliffy, hard to reach islands in Kanto instead of waiting for challengers in the Viridian City Gym.

For the longest time he remained undefeated, unchallenged... until, of course, news of two Johto trainers came to him. Lyra (Crystal) and Ethan (Gold) managed to defeat him once, forcing him to give them the Earth Badges, and - much to his annoyance - he could see much of Red in these two. So, after his defeat, he left his gym to train his pokémon further, knowing that somewhere out there, those two would be going after the only person above him: Red.

And ohhh did Red owe him a rematch.

Personality: Blue is, in every sense of the word, the rival of the original pokemon games. He goads, teases, and is a general jerk to the player through the entire course of the game. And, really, despite getting older, he hasn’t changed all that much. At least on the outside.

First and foremost, Blue is a jerk. He has no qualms about calling others losers, scoffing at them and their sentimentality, and just generally being a pain in the ass. One of his favorite pastimes seems to be trying to get a rise out of the otherwise calm Red, and while it doesn’t really work normally - it would work so much better if the guy could just lose to him once in a while - that doesn’t stop him from trying again later. But aside from this almost childish side to him, there is more to his jerk streak than just that. Blue honestly just doesn’t care about things outside of himself, and this selfishness extends even as far as helping innocents, doing things for the greater good. In the past, he actually walked through a Team Rocket building without so much as trying to destroy the entire organization. Because when he did so, it just wasn’t his problem. They didn’t offer anything to help him get stronger, to get closer to his goal, so he let them be. Let Red come along behind him and deal with the idiots for him.

However, things have actually changed a little since then. Most of his actions in the past were a direct result of the competition he had going with Red, so when he was defeated by him at the Indigo Plateau and scolded by his grandfather, he actually did rethink things a little. Sure, he still goads, and he’ll originally walk past a scuffle, but instead of keeping going, he’ll fight himself into actually bothering to help. Sure, he might call the guy about to get his pokemon napped a pathetic weakling who has no business training pokemon, but he’ll help. That’s what counts, right? Right?

Another key aspect of Blue’s personality is his competitive streak. He is always looking for a good battle and some decent competition. It was the driving force behind him becoming a Trainer and, later on, a gym leader after all. And that’s really where most of his bad attitude stems from still. If he meets a trainer and, once seeing their pokemon or their general attitude as a human being, he will judge them and their ability to really challenge him. More often than not, he’ll wave them over and just not bother with a battle. However, if he sees someone who looks and acts tough, and seems to have some well-leveled pokemon? Well, he’ll get excited and go at them. Or, as of late, he’ll offer them an invitation to his gym in order to battle. But even then, he keeps up his haughty stance on thing, often going so far as to say things along the lines of “it’ll probably be a waste of my time, but I’ll humor you”. If you so happen to prove to be a disappointment, however? Well, Blue won’t waste any energy trying to cheer you up and boost your spirits. He will simply call you a loser, tell you to get out of his sights, and will go on with his day. So really, he’s not a pleasant person in everyday encounters.

However, if you should manage to put up with the snarky gym leader for long, you’ll notice a side to him that he tries to keep hidden in order to keep up the “tough guy” outer appearance he has. And that is, quite simply, that Blue actually does care about his pokemon. And, in very, very rare occasions, can have a moment of humility and act like a decent human being. This is shown in the ways that, if he’s beaten in a battle, he’ll actually be slightly awkward when called for a rematch. He’ll use his snark, sure, but in the end he’ll go for it, and will actually admit to the fight being fun, regardless of if he wins or loses. In addition, his sister Daisy is desperately trying to set people up with him. After all, she gave Lyra (the female chosen character in HG/SS) his number in hopes of getting her brother to stop being such a jerk and actually get with someone. This shows that there is more to Blue than meets the eye. And really, just look at his team. Return is a move both Gyarados and Pidgeot have, and its rather effective. This move is based on how much the pokemon like their trainer. So while Blue has no pokemon that level through happiness, the fact that he’s chosen these moves out of everything mean that he does have a softer side to him, a side that’s finally, after years of getting lectured by his pokemon, been effective in raising his pokemon. Even if these moves hadn’t been in his team’s moveset, the fact that Blue’s gym also has students despite his general attitude towards people is just further evidence for the fact that there is something redeemable in the otherwise jerky teenager.

Seeing as this is so, this “nicer” interior that Blue has is rare to surface. Only in the case of someone blatantly doing something against people that he - reluctantly - befriends, or in the face of something so blatantly wrong that even he is offended, will this side come out. Otherwise, he will be the epitome of a through-and-through jerk. However, it is important to note that the switch from being on Blue’s bad side to his good side isn’t like flipping a switch. The boy doesn’t have many people outside his family that can stand him enough to want to befriend him, so once he feels a certain fondness towards people, or if his attitude doesn’t automatically chase them off, he will go into an extremely awkward phase. Blue… really isn’t used to people liking him. He doesn’t really know what to do with friendship anymore, since for a long, long time he thought it would be better to just not have friends at all. That it would make him stronger. So in that transition period, he will still be snappy, but there will be lots of awkward, derpy moments that will probably surprise a lot of people.

After all, its not often that the boy proves he’s an actual human being.

Abilities: Blue has no “special abilities” in an unnatural sense, however he does have an extensive knowledge of the species of animals in his world, Pokémon. As a trainer, former League Champion, and a Gym Leader, Blue is proficient in the training and control of Pokémon, and as such he’s developed “tricks” to gaining the trust and loyalty of otherwise “wild” animals. Other than this, wandering the wilderness of Kanto and being able to stand with his Pokémon against both wild and trained pokémon, Blue has developed a heightened physical ability. He has the strength and stamina of a teenager who’s worked out extensively every day since he was twelve, and the reflexes of a natural fighter trained in the wild. He also has a keen eye for sensing strengths, weaknesses, and talent. Even though his ego tends to have him ignoring the talent bit of that.
