Who loves contractors?

I figure there are so many horror stories about people getting ripped off by contractors and tradespeople that a good story would be a nice change of pace. And, hey, isn't it just right to pimp the good if we're going to complain about the bad? Right, so: as a quick background, Sunday night we noticed a bit of an odor about the house. Sharp and irritating, and it seemed to be everywhere. Long story short, gas leak! The 1" line that feeds into the house had broken. The Atmos people came out at 4am and capped off our line. Monday I started to call around looking for a plumber (yup, plumbers do gas lines!) to fix it so we could have hot water (and eventually heat!). I called two places, the guy who'd worked for the contractor on the plumbing in our basement (since he did good work, but I didn't know his rates) and a big 'corporation'. Turns out the little guy was over $70 cheaper on his estimate, and he could do it the next day.

Tuesday he comes out and fixed the line. And the kicker? Evidently it took him less time than he thought, because he charged us $60 less than his estimate. Seriously, an honest plumber.

So should you need some sewer, water, or gas work done, consider this my recommendation:

plumber, gas, contractor, business referrals
