Brownfields job training program accepting applications
Applications are now being accepted for a program to train Kansas City workers for careers in environmental remediation and energy conservation.
The Kansas City Metropolitan U.S. Environmental Protection Agency American Recovery and Reinvestment Act Brownfields Job Training Partnership is a three-year program to train unemployed and underemployed individuals in the Kansas City area for these careers. The partnership is funded by the EPA through ARRA economic stimulus funds.
The lead applicant in this partnership is OAI, Inc., a Chicago-based non-profit with a 33-year history in vocational training. OAI has been conducting training in environmental remediation in the Kansas City area for the past 12 years. Partners include: Era Environmental & Safety; the Metropolitan Community Colleges; the City of Kansas City, Mo.; the City of Independence, Mo.; the Ivanhoe Neighborhood Council; and Connections to Success. As the project develops, other organizations also are expected to join the partnership.
The Training Program is 40 hours per week for nine weeks and will include:
Foundation Skills Training in Hazardous Waste Removal, Occupational Safety and Health Administration General Construction Safety, First Aid, CPR and Job Readiness. Participants can then select either Environmental Remediation, including mold, lead and asbestos abatement; or Energy Conservation and Home Weatherization, which will introduce participants to home weatherization skills and strategies.
Graduates will receive state certifications and licensing in remediation or weatherization fields as well as assistance in job placement.
The Environmental Remediation Track will run from January through March 2010. The second, Energy Conservation and Home Weatherization Track will begin in July and run through September 2010. Space is available to train a total of 100 individuals over the next two years.
“This exciting job training partnership program will not only train and put Kansas City residents to work, it also will give them experience in new green technology fields that will benefit properties in the community,” Councilwoman Sharon Sanders Brooks, 3rd District, said.
To participate in the job training program, applicants must:
Be interested and committed to completing the program
Be at least 18 years old
Have a high school diploma or a GED
Have a driver’s license and access to a car
Pass a drug test, background check and a general physical examination
Be able to lift at least 50 pounds.
For the January Environmental Remediation Track training session, applications must be returned by 5 p.m. on Dec. 5.
Based upon the applications, trainees will be invited to participate in an orientation session to determine eligibility, suitability and interest. Eligible candidates will be invited to submit required documentation and participate in a two-day try-out session. Trainees who succeed in the try-out sessions will be invited to participate in the training.
